I have an electrical issue. When i hook up my truck to my trailer all the lights work. When i press on the brakes the truck and trailer brakes work. Once I turn my truck lights on at night the trailer brakes flash like the brake is being pressed down. When i actually do press down on the brakes at night the brakes work, but the trailer lights turn off. Could this be because i have a bad battery in my truck and there isn't enough electrical output to light up everything and make the electrical brakes work also? Thanks guys.

First thing I would check is the ground. I've had a problem like that before and it was caused by a bad ground..... never really figured out why the lights did what they did but once I had a good ground I had no more problems.

I thought it was the ground wire also, so i switched out the ground wire and that didnt help me out at all. Im tempted to rewire the whole pin adapter on the trailer since my trailer is a 1987 so something else might be loose that i dont know about. I still would like inputs though.

Sounds like a ground to me also, but if this happens when you are pulling, it should still ground some through the ball. It also could be a short in your brake lights that wipes out your running lights when you are on the brakes.

It sounds like the ground is insufficient, perhaps only going through the hitch ball. I would check the ground wire on the trailer side, from the pin to the frame, to see if it is intact and has a good connection to the trailer frame. If it does, check the same wire on your truck, from the pin to the frame. Many are grounded to the frame rail near the back of the truck. If either wire is damaged or corroded, it could cause the affect you notice.
