Is there a place online that you can buy a walk thru door?? We are looking to get one installed and the places around here want like $900 to install the door. So I thought if I could buy one myself cheaper then find a welder to cut and install it that would be the cheaper route.

I have a friend who cut a hole 'submarine style' in his trailer for a walk thru. He used the cut out piece as the door. Not sure how he attached the hinges, probably welded them on. Also, not sure what he used to cut out the hole. I assume he used some sort of stripping around the edges (I never actually saw the door - he just told me about it).
Seems like a good, safe, economical way to add a walk through door.

I was buying them from a Kiefer dealer for about $300, I haven't bought one in a couple of years. Anyone with a jigsaw can install one, they come with a frame and already hinged.

Priced on Friday afternoon, $350 plus $40 shipping to my door. Same info, comes with frame, anyone with a small saw capable of cutting metal can install ~ so I'm told. I'll let you know, I'm ordering one today.

I hope this post doesn't stir anything up, but the company is: Universal Trailers (Exiss & Sooner) ~ Ask for David in parts at toll free 877-533-9477. I did ask them before publishing this phone number. He was very helpful and informative. I have no idea of the quality, but am going to take the chance anyway. All the other quotes were out of my price range. Good luck!

Thanks for the info BarnToys - I'm looking forward to info like - which side are the hinges on? or can you hang it in either direction so that you can let it swing open the way you want it to? Is the total width 23 inches or is the opening 23 inches? And can you take some pictures?
I'm starting to think I really want the pass through door and the price is looking very nice.

Got the door in a few weeks ago! I just havent gotten the guts yet to cut into my beloved trailer! As good as door looks sitting in my dressing room against the wall, I guess I just need to, as Nike puts it, "just do it". The door after mounted will open into the horse compartment and push to the left side. It has two locks, one with a key and the other is a deadbolt type. It is light weight and made of vinyl, alumn. & fiberglass. I am very pleased with the quality for the price ($390 total). It will alow me to have a walk through when the others were well out of my price range.

Just a FYI, I have an Exiss Event with a walkthru door that sounds like what is described. It has held up very well, including one furious and impatient packmule having a "spell" of temper! It seems strong and solid, and "sounds" solid when opened and closed. Good luck with your project...good for you!

The door frame unit mounts (via self tapping screws) directly between the vertical support bars. It is designed to mount from the horse side, thus making it stronger to resist "pushing in". I will need to trim out the wall on the inside of the dressing room simply for esthetic reasons. If someone will let me know how to post a picture, I'll be happy too. I hope this will help other DYI'ers that cant afford other options.

In 1997, we bought a Steel Sundowner and put a walk thru door in it. We went to a local camper/rv dealer and purchased a smaller trailer door. I think it was around$80.00 to $100.00 and something dollars. It actually resembles a house trailer door but is smaller. I actually believe it might of been used? But it didn't look used. It has a regular handle/door knob, but had never been a problem. Have hauled many of horses by that knob. It has worked fine. But my husband cut and put the door in himself. So you might need to be a little handy. Hope that has helped in someway. Bye, Bye.

Finally, a walk through door! This can be a DIY project with some help, but note the following advice: measure, measure and remeasure between your studs. Mine were not standard width apart and very hard to see because both sides of my walls are finished and insulated. Have the correct saw, not a jig saw! (you'll need a grinder), plenty of cutting wheels, self tapping screws in both metal color and black (to replace the matting), treated lumber, liquid nails, etc. I started out with a jig saw, after 4 hours of sawing and $10 in blades, I called in reinforcements! Ended up buying a grinder with cutting wheels and made a huge difference.
By doing it myself, with help too, I was able to mount the door higher on the wall to prevent sawdust from coming back into to dressing room. It also allowed me the option of which studs to place the door between. I moved it down on section, as my horse paws with his front feet, thus by moving the door down the wall further, he will not be pawing around the base of the door. I also was able to remount the rubber matting and retro fit it to the door as well as the padding that runs above the matting. Allot to consider, it's not just cutting a hole in the wall. I did take the time to mount a piece of treated 2x8 between the studs, the floor and the two pieces of aluminum along the bottom to allow for extra support for the door frame. All in all, I am very pleased but had no idea of how much time this project would take!
My husband is still scratching his head wondering why I needed a walk through.
If anyone has any questions, I'll do my best to help! As much as I hate to admit this, ladies, you'll need a strong hand to help out!

To put pictures on here...after you hit reply, see the bar across the top of the reply box that has all the little symbols on it? B I U a bunch of lines (to line up text) etc. Find the one that looks like a picture frame with a picture of a mountain in it. Click on that. It will give you another box. That box will show alternate URL.
To be able to post your photos, you will have to put them somewhere like Photobucket, not just on your computer. After posting them to Photobucket or whoever, you can copy and paste the http:// address they give you for the photo in that box.
Can't wait to see the photos! If you can't or don't want to post them to another site, you can send them to me and I will post them here for you. yorkhorse at cableone.net is my email.

The pictures will be posted this afternoon by Linda. I installed the door a little higher on the wall so that I wouldn't track as many shavings inside the dressing room. I also moved the door one full section to allow for my blanket bar to be reinstalled in the dressing room for my show pads to hang on. My cabnets are all the way to the corner becasue I don't have the need for a water tank inside the dressing room (it will be mounted outside under the noise). I also moved my brackets for the removable rear take saddle rack, so it can still be used in the dressing room should I need the extra room in the back. I reinstalled the matting to the door and I am going to retro fit the thick padding back also. I still need to add the trim to the dressing room side. I used the trailer this past week end and was very pleased. Now on to part two ~ finding a wall covering that I like.
