I must be a wimp. I wouldn't be on that road with my rigs. Truck alone, but no trailer.

Notice the trailer's left running board was already missing from a previous mishap..

No.  I suspect the brake controller was at fault.  An improperly adjusted, or junk time controller would not have provided enough trailer brakes allowing the trailer to push the truck.
