Years ago I used to ride in an area which was near or around the Hawk Mt, Kempton area in Berks Co, PA.  Parts of the trail system used to intertwine with a very small section of the  Appalachian trail.  At one time I had maps of this area which I got through the forestry service, but over the years with moving around I have lost them.  Who knows after 20+ years this area may not be open for riding anymore.  At any rate if anyone from that area has any information about the trails and that area I would appreciate hearing from them.  Once in a rare blue moon, I return to that part of the country to visit family and had thought about taking my horses and mid west husband to show him the trails (if they exist anymore).  Thanks

I don't know about that area, but come to the Mountains of east Tennessee, and I can get you on the Appalachian Trail!

My dad still lives around Bristol, TN. Where are you located? We have actually talked about riding in Eastern TN, but not sure about where to stay, etc? Still hoping someone will know something about the Kempton, Pa Hawk Mt area, it was pretty neat riding there. Let me know where you are and maybe we can hook up sometime. Thanks for the reply.

It may very well be now, but back then it wasn't-at least in that area. And only a very SMALL part of the trails that I remember intertwined with the Appalachian trail. As mentioned before the maps I had for trail riding way back then (early 1980's)were from the forestry service showing the trails and the Appalachian trail and some of the trails were word of mouth from people I knew.

There are parts of the appalachian trail open to horses for short distances.  This is usally to connect to another trail.  If you want to stay in Townsend, check out www.orchardcovestables.com and tell them Harvey sent you!
