For thoses of use with little to no hay left and the prospect of paying $8 plus per bale, I highly recommed adding hay cubes to stretch current hay supplies. I have a wp gelding, usually gets 12% protein grain and high quality orchard grass (tested out 11 to 12%) by lowering the protein and carbs in his grain to 10%, we were able to add alfalfa cubs to stretch our hay out. He seems very content, not to mention, it's much easier to deal with. Crunched the numbers, no noticable difference as far as expense. I'm sure every case is different, but it has worked well here.
