Buying a truck for a 4 Star, 2 horse bumper pull (with dressing room) and these are the options: 1. 2001 Dodge Ram 2500, 4 door extended cab; 5.9L V8, 4WD w/53000 miles 2. 1996 Chevy C2500 HD Cheyenne extended cab; 6.5L 8 cylinder Diesel Turbo, 2WD rear, w/51000 miles OR 3. 2004 Chevy Silverado HD 4 dr extended cab, RWD w/80000 miles.
It will be a secondary vehicle, primarily only to tow with. The '01 and '04 are about $4000 more than the diesel.

none of t above, Find a FORD. or a Dodge with a cummings.
ALl jokes aside, we have the best of both worlds, we have a dodge 3500 with dual rear wheels and the cummings engine. Great for the paved road.
We also have a Ford F-350 4WD, great for when it rains and you are off the pavement.
If we could only have one I would always choose the 4WD over a 2wd because like a loaded gun in a dark ally, *it is better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.*

I'd put my vote in for a Dodge with a Cummins and the 4WD would be great (like Mike and Darcy said, better to have and not need...). I have a '96 Dodge Ram 2500 with a Cummins with 255,000 miles on her and she's still towing strong. Luv her. She's ugly but she's a hard working girl.

LOL!! My thoughts exactly. I would choose A or C. It would be hard to choose between those two without seeing what kind of condition they are in. If the chevy had the 6 liter engine, I would probably go with that truck just because it is newer (yes, higher mileage), but the hoses, belts etc have 3 years less wear on them. If the chevy had the smaller V8, I would probably go with the Dodge.

Questions like this are close to asking one's current religious faith...
There are positive and negative stories for every model out there...
The only way you know for sure...is have your mechanic check it...and then it is only good at that moment...
I would buy new and get the warranty...
And which brand?...Well we have 2007 GM3500, 2000 Chevy 2500, 1987 Ford F350 and a 1995 Dodge 3500...they all tow and they all work just fine...though the GM is the current primary...

Yuperdo do dot go with the 6.5. I have one in My shop as a reminder.Froze up after spinning rod bearings. Consider 8 quart capacity compared to 14 to 16 on other diesels.

I would go with the 04 chevy. That will be plenty of truck for what you're pulling. I do think that you could find a good used diesel though (5.9 cummins or 7.3 powerstroke), and probaby not spend much more money and have the truck last much longer.
What would you do?
