We rode and camped at Eagle Ranch this weekend. It is north of Springfield,Mo near Collins... It was very, very nice... they have such a clean and welcoming place. They have the best stall set ups I've seen! ( no sawmill rotten toothpick gates here). The trails are nice and we were cool once out in the woods... On Saturday evenings they offer a cookout and entertainment.

Well, now the word is out. Shoulda kept it a secret. Ha Ha! Been going there for 3 years at least 6-8 times a summer. Always very clean and safe for the horses. This is not a party place, so most folks think it is boring. But we like to go there on weekend trips and really enjoy the steak dinners. Not to mention some of the local restaurants. Since Ponderosa closed, it's been more busy on the weekends than it has in the past. Glad you had a good time.
Another place to check out that is near there is Berrybend at Truman Lake. They have some outside pens that are usable only if it hasn't rainined a bunch... which is not the case right now with our Summer monsoon.

We were at Eagle Ranch last weekend, also. The camping is out in the sun in an open field. The stalls are secure, but solid closed on 3 1/2 sides, making them very hot.
On a good note, the trails were very nice. All in the shade and all wooded. There were a lot of trails packed into 1000 acres. I was afraid there wouldn't be enough.
The campground was very clean, the owners were very nice and willing to please. They cleaned the stalls when you took your horse out. That's unusual!!
The dinner was typical of "mass feeding", nothing special.
I thought it was expensive for what it offered. Elec. but no water at each site, but water at the barns. There was also an extra charge to ride the trails. Well, duh? What were we there for!?
Not sure it warrants a trip back. There are too many other nice places.

We were there the first part of May, and the owners were great. They furnished you with cold bottled water, ice, and firewood. The bath house is one of the nicest that I have seen, and if you forget something, they have samples there for you to use. There is also a 5 acre pond with a boat to use. I think it will be a place I camp at in the early spring or late fall tho, because like a previous person said, the camping is in the sun and the stalls don't have much ventilation. But having your stalls cleaned for you was a big plus.

J&J where are those other nice places in MO to ride? We've been to Big Creek, Mingsville, Huckleberry, Eminance, Golden Hills, Berry Bend and we checked out J Bar S this past weekend while we were at Eagle Ranch. Very primitive stalls there and access to trail heads were difficult to locate so we won't be staying there. Always trying to find new areas to ride at over weekends.

We like a place called Whispering Pines. Nice shady campground. You can camp in the pines. The stalls are small but in good condition. They have elec/water but bring a long hose, not water at every site. It is not a "big" campground where they feed you and all that. We go for the riding. Unlimited trails and you can ride to the Current River (about 20 minute ride). There are wooded trails along both sides of the river and the trails criss cross the river many times. Some areas can be deep, you need to watch. A great place to go when it is hot. The river has many springs along it and they keep the river COLD! You will meet canoeists.
If you like the bigger, more organized type camping, there is a place I have not been to called Riversedge. I have heard good things about it. I just prefer the more rustic type camping.

j&j, tell me more about Whispering pines. we have camped at big creek many times. is it anything like the riding at big creek?
Haven't been to Big Creek. But, have heard that the riding is very similar. They are only a few miles apart.
WP has 44 sites, most are in the pines and shady. There are several barns of open stalls. The rate for a site and 2 stalls amounts to $25/nite. Great people that run it. Some others who have been to both can do a better comparison.

I have camped at Big Creek and have road past Whispering Pines. WP lloks very nice, however I will comment on Big Creek. Big Creek is an excellent place. The stalls are clean, the food is great. They feed you 3 meals a day on thier organized camp rides. You can riding wherever you want to go. I would recommend using a GPS riding away from the camp. The travel to Big Creek can be bad, but you can't have everything. You have 7 miles of gravel roads. My wife and I ride gaited horses and cover alot of ground during the days and see many sites. Each night you can huddle around your own campfire or join around someone else's camp fire. We have been going o Big Creek 5 years now and just love it.

I totally agree-Big Creek is great. Been there 7 times. But they are busy in October and needed another place to ride. Will have to get back on the waiting list.

They were booked for the week of Oct. 20th. Not sure about other times, believe the Foxtrotter ride was also booked. Have to work on getting back on the waiting list. Going to ride down at A to Z in Oklahoma also, have not rode there yet. Looks good-rode at the other places around there.
