Does anyone know where to get patterns to make saddle bags or someof the over the saddle panniers?  Canvas or leather, but I would prefer canvas.

My daughter wants to kill two birds with one stone, she can make some for her girl scouts sewing patch and use them for her 4-H demonstration.

I've tried tandy.  The only thing on there are motorcycle bags.

Try www.tandyleatherfactory.com. They have retail stores located all over the US, but also do mail order. I have used them as a source for leather crafting for many years. I know that they have saddle bag patterns for real saddles. As far as Panier patterns, I do not know. I don't recall ever seeing those.

Thanks everyone.
I e-mailed tandy and they do have a book of patterns. They just don't carry the kit anymore.
I did a search for saddle bag patterns, but all that came up was motorcycle bags with cammo patterns. Maybe I was to tired to type it in right.

I bought a set on ebay, the cheap 'roughout' kind. I used them for a while, decided they were not nice, and used them as the model to make my own. By seeing how they were put together I was able to make some minor changes and basically make up my own pattern. You could even take them apart and use the pieces as a template. OTOH, if you leave the originals intact, you can re-sell them, or give them away. Feel free to contact me if you would like more info. Chris.

I hadn't thought of taking a cheepie set apart.   I guess I could find some heavy canvas/duct material and do it that way.  Thanks

Any ideas on here to get a heavy material?

I haven't had much luck there. I've yet to find a fabric shop that stocks anything heavier than denim. I've thought about asking at places that make tents and awnings. Also, canvas tarps show up in farm supply stores from time to time.

I emailed Chicago canvas and supply ( chicagocanvas.com ) and they sent me a sample book and thir #8 natural canvas looks to be the what I was looking for.  It is thick and labled for floorcloths, bags, craft projects and placemats.  They also sell the nylon webbing (for edges), tear mender fabric cement, and the  water resistant canvas preservative.
