Ditto - leather halter & trailer tie w/ the release snap - I also put a fly mask on when the windows with bars are dropped to protect their eyes from debris flying around.

YES! Defin. either breakaway or leather! My smaller horse literally put a bend in the front of my trailer when she panicked and pulled back- never again without some type of breakaway halter- either leather or otherwise, AND use in conjunction with the trailer ties that are 'breakaway'. These ties have velcro on them and will release as well- can't go wrong.
Am also using Clinton Andersons tie device (when tied anywhere outside of trailer)for my 2 year old colt who is half draft as he is STRONG. You can find these on his website for around $20- well worth it.

I use breakaway trailer ties, with the breakaway part on the trailer side, not the horse side. That way, there is still something attached to the horse if you have to get them out in a hurry.
