I have never used a portable corral, the kind with step in posts, electric tape and D-cell battery  charger...  I can't figure out how the corner posts stay solid and don't bow inward when you string the wire/tape. If I had a 12 x 12 corral, with 6 feet between posts, are the corner posts stable?  How far apart can you have those step in temporary fence posts?  I am doing my first endurance race in a couple weeks and wanted to buy a temp. corral but am worried about if it's going to be the right choice.

I've used a hotwire pen many times.  I usually use some tent stakes and tie off the corner post to help keep them straight.  They can/will bow in.  I also have the wire run to the outside of the post to help keep it from pulling loose.

What I've seen is guy lines run down outside the corner posts, kinda like stakes on tents. They're staked into the ground at a slant (top of the stake further away than the inserted end). Seems to work for those who have them.

Good luck on your endurance ride! What distance are you doing? I've only been brave enough to do 25's.

My posts always bow inward. But it doesn't really matter to me. I make more of a circle instead of a square, so it evens out the pressure between all the posts a little better. I have used post spacing up to 20 or 30 feet. I carry 10 posts and about 250 feet of electric rope.

Weather permitting, I am going to Molalla, Oregon on the 21st of this month to do a 25 miler... I have never ridden that far, but my horse and I did a 20 mile loop a few weeks ago with a gal who does LD's on a monthly basis, and my horse did great - he's a spunky 7 year old arab and loves to go riding!  I usually do mountain and trail riding so this will be different but I'm excited about it.  Other people there will be doing 50, 75 or 100 miles - all within 24 hours.  I'll have to see how we do in the 25 miler before thinking about longer distances :)

If yall are tired of the electric portable corrals, this guy has some really nice steel ones that fold up into a small space in the back of your pickup or tack room. I ordered 2 extra panels for a little more room for my chuncky quarter mare. I have used them camping and they are great! Check out the site...

No.  We are not tired of the electric corrals.  They provide ten times the room, take up one tenth the room in the trailer, and cost one tenth the price as your steel ones.

I went back and reread my post.  It sounded a little harsh in my head.  I did not mean it to be demeaning to any person or any thing.  When it comes to corrals it's "whatever turns your crank."

Hey don't worry, sometimes things on the board sound harsh sometimes not. This forum is pretty "no holds barred" which is fine with me. So, no hard feeling

Thinking of getting away for an overnite stay in the sierras. The weather is supposed to be 65 during the day and 36 at nite. So..........either a day ride or ride all day, stay the nite and come home when I decide to thaw out!!!! Either way hopefully will get the ride up on my site if I get a free chance after my weekend!

Cowpony01  I was looking at your pics of your trailer. Do you have saddle racks in your rear tack. I just bought the cart a corral and it looks like it will be a tight fit because I have 3 saddle racks in my tack room. I'm thinking about cutting the lowest one off so I'll be able to put the corral in there. My trailer is a 3h modified to a 2h with LQ. So I don't need 3 racks for saddles.

Hey mingiz.......

My saddle racks are up front, and I have a 3 tier one, I only put my saddle in there when I go to the mountains and keep it in with me if it rains. Yes, I have a rear tack and no saddle rack in it, I think there is a pic of my rear tack in my photo album on here with the corral in the back, it's in the black bag............

I have alot more crap in the rear tack now too!!!! Everything fits in it's own spot in there, all my camping stuff is in the front in the corner where my saddle rack is. I make good use of minimal space....... My husband just shakes his head when I add more crap in there!

Here are bigger pics for ya so you can see both areas.........

Thanks CowPony01 I think if I cut the first rack off of the saddle rack I'll be able to get it in there. Thanks for the pics......

We used an aluminum 5-panel corral that telescoped down to 7'6" and fit ion the slant wall of the tack room. We liked it a lot except that it took up a lot of room. Now we have a hot wire (actually tape) pen that we like better. Takes up less room and expands to cover an acre or more. Only had trouble once. When a bull elk jumped in with the horses and walked right through it on the way out.

The horses stayed put even tho the fence was down.

I've used the portable electric fence a lot.

Somethime we pack in a full spool of wire and put up 1/4 mile or 1/2 mile wire around a large meadow in the wilderness.  The photo below is in 4 lakes Basin in the Uinta Wilderness and we have strung two 1/4 mile spools of hot wire to make a large pasture that we turned all 19 of our horses out into. We let them graze all day and highline them at dark. We included some Spruce trees inside the  hot wire enclosure, so the horses had some shelter from the sun o occassional rain. By making it this big, we spread the horses over a large area and they don't wear out the fragile mountain meadow.

Other trips, I just build a small corral by the trailer, Like others above, I usually make mine round so the pressure is equal all around.  Sometimes I'll use a tree or a ring off the trailer to support a squared off corner.  (Put a step in stake at the corner and run the hot wire through the insulator on the stake,  Using some baling string, I'll tie the stake to something firm like a tree. This holds a square corner from  bowing in.

My horses respect the wire and it works just fine for them.  Deer and Elk don't know what it is and they will run through the meadows at night and knock down the hot wire, That's why we highline at night.

Beautiful picture! I used the portable corral with electric tape at the endurance ride a few weeks ago and it worked perfectly. The corner posts were not a problem because the ground wasn't soft, and I used a round configuration as suggested. The only thing I need to change is the connections to the charger. I brought a 5' peice of rebar for the ground, which I drove into the ground with a small sledge hammer. The wire I brought to run from the charger to the fence tape was too heavy and it was hard to bend around the charger pegs. Next time I will use a lighter covered wire with an aligator clip on on end. Other than that, I wouldn't change a thing. My horse did great with it.

Wow, 5ft of rebar!  Did you get it back out or pound it all the way in and leave it?  When I use the portable corral I just use the spike on one of the posts for the ground.  I've never had a problem with it.  If the ground is dry I will take a gallon jug of water with a hole in the bottom so it will seep into the ground and keep it moist.

I just pounded it in about 2'... it was easy to get it back out.  I pulled on it back and forth to loosen it a bit and it came right out.  I couldnt' figure out how else to ground it.  I saw what the set up was at the barn where I board out back where there's no electricity, and copied their method.
