Looking for feedback on Rudy's Horse Camp in Salt Lick, Ky.  Thinking about going there in October.  How are the facilities, trails, etc.?  Thanks

We went to Rudy's about 4 years ago. The camp is small and at that time there were only two flush toilets and showers...one for the men and one for the women. There was a LOT of drinking going on. We awoke one morning to find some barefoot cowboy passed out in the bed of our truck!

The riding was good but VERY challenging. There were only two ways out of camp and both were straight uphill with a lot of switchbacks. We were there in the rainy season and the mud was knee deep. We rode one trail with a place called "Jump Rock" and I thought I would wet my pants but was proud of myself and my horse that we made it.

We cooked our own meals so I can't tell you about the food but the entertainment was good. They built a big bonfire and had a bluegrass band play on the front porch. The music was very good.

Take a heater and lots of blankets, it gets COLD down in that valley. And your horse had better be in good shape.

There is another camp in that area called Red Hill. You might want to check them out too.

Thanks for the info.  Their ad indicates the camp is under new managment; not sure if that is good or bad news.  I will try and get info on Red Hill camp.

I see you are in VA so you are probably trying to stay in eastern KY but if you wanted to come further west, there are a few good places.

Double J Stables at Mammoth Cave National Park is a nice little campground with great riding. We consider it our "home" ride since it is only an hour away and we ride there quite often.

Long C is on the KY/TN border and is a quiet camp with nice riding.

Further west we have Willow Creek and LBL.

We are headed to Willow Creek the last weekend in Oct. Maybe you would like to join our group. We already have 6 trailers and 12 riders going, but there is plenty of room.

RIDE ON!

Hi:  Thanks for the info on the other camps.  Yes, this time we are trying to keep our travel time as short as possible.  Thanks for the invite to join you but will have to take a raincheck.  Maybe next year.  Mary

Just got back from Rudy's Ranch for Labor Day weekend trip. I really enjoy it there. The scenery is beautiful. We stayed for a week in October 2 years and enjoyed every bit of trail that they have plus more. We also trailered over to White Sulfur. the campground is nice and flat with large spots. A creek runs through camp to water horses out of (some horses will not drink city water). The riding is rough in areas but very nice scenery. Alot of the trails are old fire roads that you can 2 wide and gait away!!! I will have to say that they do party there but nothing too outrageous. Enjoy!!!

Hi:  Thanks for the info.  Apparently there have been some improvements over the years.  Earlier reply had me wondering about staying there.  Thanks again.

Give us a report when you get back. If they've made some changes, it might be worth a second trip.

I hope you enjoy Willow Creek this year, but I have heard from a very reliable source that this will be the last year they will be open. They have sold out to some Italians and will be closing at the end of the season. We really enjoy Wranglers in LBL. They have wonderful facilities and lots of trails, with entertainment on Saturday nights and a restaurant with a tack store.

I was just at Rudy's a couple of weeks ago.  Everything the previous post mentioned is accurate.

It seems to be the premeir party place.  Facilities are limited.  The trails are not marked well at all and if it is rainy can be dangerous.  Challenging is putting it mildly.  The Jump rock trail is in very poor condition and if I had it to do over again I wouldn't put my horse in that situation.

The Red Hill campground in Livingston is smaller, but the facilities are just as nice, the barn is much better and close to your campsite, not the case at Rudy's.  The trails are marked fairly well at Red Hill and are not as dangerous as Rudys.

I appreciate the updated info.  Some partying is okay as long as it is controlled and doesn't ruin my stay but this doesn't sound like the case.  I've done the bog and jog as we call the mud and it's no fun either.  We ride fairly rough mountain trails here but try to avoid, if possible, the dangerous situations.  We were on the fence about staying at Rudy's but this helps to make the decision to not go.  Will try to get info on the other place you mentioned.  Thanks

Hey Gaitin - Where is Edinburg? Are there any good riding campgrounds in western VA? I lived in VA in the late 1980s in a little town south of Richmond. I would like to plan a riding trip somewhere in VA and get a chance to visit with some of my old buddies.

RIDE ON!

Edinburg off 81 between woodstock and mt jackson.  Fort Valley horse and mule camp is a popular place to camp and ride.  If your rig is over 40 you may have problems, although I have seen tractor trls come over with my own eyes.
