My wife just completed the grandaddy of endurance race, the TEVIS CUP - 100 miles in One Day - from the edge of Lake Tahoe across the summit of the Sierra Nevadas, and into the town of Auburn, CA for completion. I am so proud of her and my horse "Chance" for this feat. Not bad for a little lady who will be turning 60 in less than two weeks. (she's gonna hate me for that one)!

Longrider, Congrats to your lady!!
I was following the progress of the Tevis, and my fav was pulled for time at the half way point. As you know this is the toughest test of both men and women and their wonderful horses. I know what you mean about a 60 yr old. I will be 60 the 3rd of Oct, and will be at the Calif central coast to train and ride the trails there. I currently ride in my home valley of the High Desert of So. Calif, and have done a couple of 25's and one 50 miler. I am going to the website for the race and see the finals now. Again, give the lady a big hand, and probably some much needed sleep. And give that wonderful horse a big hug, a bunch of apples and carrots, and maybe even a couple of peppermint drops. LOL LOL

Yeah..
You can imagine how sore you get. Thats why they sell a stuff called "Monkey Butt"! LOL.. It is for the heat rash, and chafing you get while riding that last 25 miles or so. And can you say out like a light when beddy bye time comes. My hoorahs go out to the folks who complete the Tevis, they are the best of the best.

On behalf of my wife, Thank You to all for the congratulatory replies. The website address is http://www.foothill.net/tevis Click on the banner that says Tune in to the Tevis Webcast Here and enjoy the photos. There were 217 starters with 87 completions. Wife completed #47 riding a 16 hand purebred Arabian. I'm still in the clouds for both of them.

We have the other 'toughest endurance race in the world', the Old Dominion. I see John Crandall made the trip to CA from VA to compete. I have not seen the results yet, but will in the endurance news. Congrats to your wife!! I do a lot of crewing--thats hard too!

I don"t know, that seems like cruel and unusual punishment to Me,100 miles in a day.
Oh good ness what would the enviromentalist say.
Well as Willy would say "wiskey for my men" (women too if they wan't)" beer for my horses" cause I'm gonna need it to go to sleep.Someone call a tow truck to get Me up in the mornin !
Good riding! and remember when someone says "act your age" you can say "I am"
Makes me sore to think about it....where's that wiskey ? little monkey butt too please..thanks,don't get the two mixed up !

Carol & Brenda-Sorry for delay- Thanks to all the volunteers and crews that work behind the scenes to ensure a successful ride. It can't be stated enough that it is as much your efforts as it is the horse and rider's that allows them to complete. A sincere thank you to all, especially my wife's crew and all the volunteers at the Tevis!
Terri-wife's time was 23hrs 8min including 2 mandatory 1 hour vet holds which allows riders a short rest while the crew takes care of the horse. No time for napping, picnics, etc as the clock is running. 24 hours to complete after start of ride. Less than 50% completion rate.

43 43 50 Longrider... I have done two 25 mile and one 50 mile, but that lady of yours is one tough lady!! I usually do P&R at the Davenport Dare ride in So. Calif. Or have for the last two years, and I am always amazed at the folks who compete. I saw two mules at the last ride that were awesome animals, and hardly even broke a sweat in the desert heat here. I too ride a pur bred Arab, and feel this is where these fine animals really stand out. I hope you and your lady will "Brag" some more on here and tell us about the toughest parts of the contest. Was the shale and steepness the problem. or was the altitude, or just the energy? Wow, I am just so excited about this.. Steve

OH SHARI
Of course you would feel your butt!! It would be the next day, and the one after that, you would not be able to move. Then you find every muscle and spot you didn't know could hurt.

I see were Jonh Crandall won the tevis.. Must have been all the practice on the old dominion trails!!. I also see where a gaited km horse came in in a respectable time. Of course, nothing is better than an Arab.

Paints,
Yes, that fellow from Missouri was Bill Hinkebein, I was part of his crew.
He has won nearly everything there is to win in NATRC and on a dare from me (because so few gaited horses complete the Tevis) decided to give it a try. It is one tough ride, and although Bill's horse did not complete, he made a respectable showing. Tough to condition for the climbs and altitude when you live in Missouri. Yes, Arabs rule that ride, however there was one gaited horse that finished and a couple of mules!
