Our local GM and Ford dealers have had the larger trucks sitting on their lots for some while now, more inventory than demand. The local papers show "sale" pricing of $4k - $12k off list, depending on models. The more accessories the truck has installed, the more mark up and profit the dealer will make. These are the vehicles that proportionally, can be discounted more, rather than the "bare bones" models.
When purchasing a vehicle on a "clean deal" (no trade), the more important bargaining number is to determine the invoice price, know the hold back figure, and complete your sale with knowledge of the dealer's costs. Any truck that has been sitting for a while, has cost the dealer payments and overhead. You can usually purchase it less expensively than if you were to order a comparable new one.
