I have a GM turck that I added wiring to for towing purposes. I ran the brake controller wire and a "hot" wire back to the trailer plug. I tied the hot wire to the left most post on the under hood fuse center with a 40 amp fuse. I am afraid my fiance's son might decide to play with the trailer lights while we are parked and run down the battery. Has anyone else done this differently to have the hot wire hot only when the vehicle is in run/start so that I don't have the battery drained on me?

Find the powered sideof the ignition, run a wire to a relay installed into the hot wire. That way the relay only opens the cicuit when the ignition is on. Basically, the ignition opens and closes the circuit. ANy good mechanic can help you if you are not comfortable doing it yourself.

One "anyone else" is the Ford Motor company.
BTW, there are all sorts of other things the little 'un could do/get into.
You might need a comprehensive control program (-:

Reg, did you have a electrical diagram of how GM wires their vehicles?  Comprehensive control procedures include the little guy going to his dad's house, however this week will be an exception.
