have a dodge caravan towing a boat trailer with 4 wire harness. Has been fine for two years , now with headlights off turn signals and brake lighting is ok. With headlights on the left driver side brake lights on the trailer go off when the brakes are applied.

Hi and welcome to the Forum.
This is REALLY a truck wiring question and has NOTHING to do with horse trailers, but...
At a WAG (wide angle guess) you have a dual filament bulb that has the two filaments shorting together, perhaps only sometimes. It could be on the trailer or the Caravan, it might even be on the right (passenger) side, though I doubt it.
Alternatively a short in the trailer wiring that is shorting running light to brake/turn light on that side.
