does this switch need to be off while plugged in at campsite? if not do batteries overcharge? i'm assuming the converter is sending voltage to batteries at all times if not?

If the switch is in the off position, the battery will not be charging. The 12v equipment in the trailer will still work because it is being powered by the converter. Leaving the switch on will charge the battery and will not overcharge if the converter is a "smart" charger... reduces voltage when the battery is charged so that it maintains the charge. Most converters are chargers/maintainers...google your model to check
