I use safety chains and always hook them up but know people who don't hook them up what are the laws concerning safety chains when towing? I'm in Kentucky. Everyone seems to have a different theory.Thanks.

http://towingworld.com/towinglaws.cfmSome states don't require them on goosenecks(Kansas.) I have seen trucks flipped over by the chains when a trailer hitch failed but on the other hand I've had safety chains save my trailer when the BP hitch pin fell out and detached from my truck. Thankfully, I wasn't fully loaded at the time and it happened at a truck stop and the drivers ran to my rescue.

If the state requires them and you do not use them and your trailer breaks loose and results in a traffic fatality...the lawyers of the injured party will explain in excruciating and potentially extremely expensive (to you) detail...

But Kansas does require a breakaway device which should apply the trailer brakes
