I have a 2h bumper pull merhow w/44" dress (so a little shorter than normal). Empty weight 2953lbs. Trailer is brand spanking new. I bought it and then our 2500 suburban was totaled so now I need a new truck. We are thinking about buying a brand new pickup. The rules always used to be 3/4 ton or nothing, but this is not a big trailer. Is it worth buying the 3/4 ton up front? It's a lot of truck for our purposes, since I don't haul that often. However, being able to get a gooseneck in the future is tempting. It seems the modern half tons are as or even more capable than the previous generations of 3/4 tons. I know our 2002 2500 suburban was only rated for 9k, and now you can get well above that in a half ton. Are these built any tougher than they used to be? Will a 1/2 ton hold up to pulling a 2h bumper pull/lightweight gooseneck ~10 times a year? It would be nice to get the increased mileage/comfort for the rest of the time when we are not hauling, but I don't want to make sacrifices in safety either.I'm pushing for the 2500HD with the 6.6 Duramax, but my husband is definitely NOT sold on this and I don't want to belabor the point (and spend the extra $$) if I am not gaining anything. I don't ever plan to own more than a 2h trailer as I only have 1 horse and am not comfortable hauling the horses that belong to someone else.

I love my Duramax diesel 3500s...but then I tow a lot of stuff on the farm...like Butch said 2500 Duramax is pretty expensive for a once a month tow job...:)

I haul a keifer built 2 horsetrailer with dressing room, on a weekly basis with 2 horses, and never even feel like I am towing anything even up and down steep hills, going down toms hill in western mass is the only time I have ever even heared the truck go into it's low gear, my 2011 chevy 1500 is more than capable of handling this trailer with 2 horses, a 2500 is not needed, my husband use to hail a 4 horse. Stock trailer with a 1500 chevy without issue, but upgraded to a 2500 when purchasing a new truck as we plan on buying a lq trailer soon,
