I have a filly that is a coming 2 year old she is all foundation bred quarter horse and I do not expect her to be very big. I measured her this morning and she is about 13.2 hands would it be unrealistic to hope for her to get to at least 14.2? I know anything is possible I would be happy if she was at least 14.1 I think she is going to be pretty stocky. My gelding she is turned out with is close to 16.1 so she just looks so small to me. I may be worried over nothing .

You can take a string and measure halfway at the ankle to the horses elbow and then take string from the horses elbow and run up to withers and that will let you know pretty much how tall she will be at full growth. The string will be above the withers and should tell you the inches she will grow yet. Try it on one of your old horses and should be pretty close.

I string thing sounds fun, to cold to go try it now :) How tall were the sire and dam? In my experience horses no matter what breed were 13.2 as yearlings to make it to 15 hand full grown.

Yep, string from the ergot on the back of the fetlock to the point of the elbow, then use that measurement that you just got from the point of the elbow straight up will be the size of the horse as an adult.

I, too, had a very small Quarter horse 2-year old. I thought that his growth might have been stunted due to a severe injury at 6 weeks. Even as a three year old he was small. But between 3 and 4 he ballooned. Not only grew up he also muscled up incredibly. So don't give up. He was about 15 hands at five.
