Hello, I just got my first LQ . I was wondering if chemicals in the toilet are really necessary. If so, which ones, where to purchase. Any assistance is appreciated.

Wally and camping stores sell many types of toilet chemicals...I would recommend that you do NOT get any that has formaldehyde in it....if you plan on dumping the waste in your septic(if you have one) then definately do not get any with formaldehyde. Most brands do not have the chemical in it...they say 'formaldehyde free' on the bottle

We use T-5 available from most RV stores. It is NON formaldehyde based ,smells pleasant, and very good at breaking down solids. Only down side I can see is you have to be careful not get any of the blue crystal on you hands as it stains badly. It comes in a box of I believe 6 pkgs, so it is easy to store, can leave in RV over winter as will not freeze.

We use Rid-X liquid for septic tanks in our black tank; be sure you get the additive, not the product intended to clear roots. We found this to be effective, inexpensive and easy to find at WalMart, ACE Hardware, etc.
A bottle lasts a long time, we only use about 1/2 cup for the 40 gallon tank.

We like the blue gel packets made by Campa Chem,I believe.
When we are camping somewhere that has a dump station,I have trays of ice in the refrigerator.I pour about 1/2 bottle of Lemon Joy in the toilet after emptying it,and, follow with about 3 trays of the ice cubes.Seems to rattle around and do a final cleaning.Do NOT forget to empty this when you arrive home,otherwise-- in a few days in warm weather, you will be wondering,"what in the world is THAT???"
