Hey everyone. We're looking for our first gooseneck trailer with LQ. Been looking at Sundowner and Four Star but the prices are somewhat prohibitive to us. Does anyone have anything to say.....good or bad.....about Custom Fab trailers? Anybody know the quality of the floor boads, roof, etc?

Our friends visited the factory, gave the owner a significant down payment and was told the trailer would be done in 6 weeks. That was in August '06. Another factory visit over Christmas. Nothing going on, as it appears they are going out of business. Very sad for our friend's hard earned money!

Thanks for the info. Not the info I was looking for but I'm definitely sorry to hear about your friends' experience. Do they have any legal recourse? Kelli

Here is their response...

I read the comments concerning our trailer company. The trailer that you are talking about will be picked up next week. It is almost finished and will be the best trailer the customer has ever owned. The fact of the matter is that we are still very much in business. We are a relatively small company and have a huge backlog of orders and are slowly getting caught up. Just this week we have taken 7 trailer orders. That is in one week! Pretty substantial for a trailer company that is out of business. Candy, if you would like to know more about our trailers and have one priced, give us a call at 724-548-5529.

John Altmeyer

The last sentence is obviously for Candy girl...

The reply from Custom-Fab is very interesting to me as i live very close to their shop if they got orders for 7 trailers last week that should keep them back ordered for the next 3 or 4 months as they only turn out about 2 trailers a month. (word on the street is the have trouble finding money to buy supplies) I do in fact know more than one person from this area that made the mistake of putting big down payments on trailers there to never get them built, they finally went other places to purchase then had a terrible time getting there money back. I also know that they sold they only company truck they had (needed the money to pay bills). So in closing if you decide to buy from them you may not want to give much or any money down and be prepared for disappointment

If you are really looking for a quality custom made all aluminum trailer with living quarters buy a WEBER Trailer. they are a local manufacturing facility in Columbus Ohio. I've had my Weber trailer for 10 years with no problems and I have 2 years left on my warranty. They build each trailer one at a time not on any assembly line. And you can customize anything you want. Plus they service my trailer for free, check all welds, lighting, lug nuts and bearings. A real personal touch that large manufactures and dealers just can't do. I've included therewebsite info: www.yourweber.comGood Luck and Happy Trailering,Jane Meyer

we are also one of the many that have ordered a trailer and gave a decent amount for a down payment.we ordered one in may of 2005 and after the promise of a 6 week delivery, and many conversations of it will be going next week for the lq we finally cancelled it in august and ordered a  4 star from his ex-wife. next came the fun part of trying to get my money back. after about a month and a half of phone calls we finally did get it back. we are very happy with our 4 star and for only a little more money it was custom built the same as the custom fab was. so i would have to say run away and fast!

John Altmeyer of Custom-Fab may have been a good builder in the past, but recently he turn out to be a better liar then trailer builder. He instead mastered the art of lying and deception. Over 9 months ago he took my $3,000 deposit on a custom trailer that he never had any intention of building. Several months went by without any response as all phone calls and emails went unanswered. After 4 months, he finally responded via email with a new delivery date which came and went without any work being done. After the revised date passed without an update, I made a special 5 hour trip to Pennsylvania to surprise him in person. With a straight face he promised to have it built within 30 days or he said he would return the money. The 30 days also passed and again – no progress on the trailer. After repeatedly asking for the deposit back, he would answer “next week” but the money was never returned. We had to resort to civil action and found out that we are not alone as there are many other claims against him. My advice to everyone else out there – stay far away.
