Hi, I am looking for a trailer, 2 horse bumper pull, probably slant, for 17 hh thoroughbred. Do I need a 7'6" or will 7' do? and any trailer recommendations? looking to buy better quality used. I'll be on dirt roads some so prefer something with better than average suspension. Any recommendations greatly appreciated!

You can do a check of past threads. There have been many, many posts on straight vs. slant. I highly favor the 7' 6" tall trailer. Trailers tend to be long term investments. With a tall trailer, you have the peace of mind knowing if your horse needs change, you have an adequately tall trailer. In addition, I like the extra room around my horses for air circulation on those hot summer days.

As a dealer, most of our customers who have 17H horses will order the 7'6" tall model and I think length wise, they seem to fit better as well. A lot of the straight load models will have a removable center divider where your horse can have the entire stall area and still stand at a bit of a slant if they are more comfortable that way. I also encourage people with large horses to measure from the horses chest to tail to make sure they aren't too long for a regular stall box. The same goes for whomever you buy from....be sure to ask for stall length measurements inside the trailer. I have a 16H quarter horse (moose?) and he really doesn't fit well in a slant load. If the horse feels too cramped or claustrophobic....they may be reluctant to load next time. Good luck with your search!

Another idea....if you do find a slant load that you like, I would take out the divider and just let the horse have the entire box area so he can stand comfortably. Just a thought....

We have large horses (18h draft, 16.2 NSH and 16.1 Appendix QH).We had a BP slant trailer that we basically converted to a 2h slant: we could still haul 3 well but my draft needs more than one regular stall. 7'3" tall.We now upgraded to a 7'6" GN with 50" stalls and their angle allows them to be bigger (think about it has a 3h on a 4 horse box). My draft will touch the roof with his ears/head, but he is really mellow and pretty much spends the entire ride eating is hay...

Thank you all for your replies, I'm new to using forums and its so amazing to me that people will take the time to help out strangers. I think from what I'm hearing a 2 horse straight load or a three horse slant that is at least 7'6" high is the way to go. So my next question is about brands. there are lots out there, any recommendations for good quality and solid suspension/durability on dirt roads? Thanks again!

I would look for a warmblood trailer: it will be tall (7'6" min) and have wider stalls (44" to 50"), however be prepared to pay a slight premium for it.The trailer brand might also be dictated by your location: are you going new or used?
