I am looking at a trailer that has a 6 ft slide out in the dining area. The trailer is priced well considering it's quality and features. I really wasn't planning to get one with a slide-out but after seeing it, I like the openness it offers. For those of you with a slide-out, do you like it, are there any down sides to having it? I don't stay over night very often. I just have a family with 3 little children and would like enough space that we aren't crawling over one another when we're in the trailer.

califhorseman - have you had trouble with your slideout? I have a little boy in a wheelchair and I thought it would really open things up for him but I don't want to get a project either. The trailer is a '99 but in great shape. I appreciate any opinions as I need to make my decision soon. Thanks!!

We had an 8ft wide with no slide for 10 years. We purchased our new trailer with a slide and we absolutely love it. Granted, any time you add a big hole in the side, there can be issues over time. But I think it's worth it. We camp when it's cold with some friends and we were able to eat indoors comfortably so our food didn't turn ito a popsicle. Then went back outside to sit by the fire. If you have a wheelchair to deal with, get the slide. You will be glad you did.

I'm on an RV forum and those with slides love them for the added living space. The drawbacks seem to be leaks and occasionally mechanical problems. A warning often given to those asking for advice is to be sure that there is access to necessary areas (like the toilet or sink, for them) with the slide slid in.

I HAD a slide on my previous rig, I will not have another. The issues I had all boiled down to the wearing of slides, seals and the mechanical parts. I really liked the open space in the coach, but the negatives outweighed that feeling. Because I use my rig more than 140 nights a year I saw issues in 3 years that the average person would not see in 10 years. My new coach is 8'6" wide and is very roomy for the two of us.

I have a slide and so far it's been great. The trailer is 5 years old and we've got an additional 3 year warranty. I may think differently with the slide after the warranty runs out though... as I'm sure that is when it will begin to have issues!

The maximum width in the US is 96" so I hope yours isn't really 8'6"!

Suziew27, No we have not had any major problems as of yet with the slider. The one thing that does pop up on the weather stripping need work each year. What have the owners done by way of maintance? What issues have they had, and have you had the trailer inspected.

I was using a special silicon RV spray made just for lubing the bulb seals on slides. It really helped the seals. You also have to clean the top before retracting or there are big problems.
