Shimek Work Day Saturday June 25th

Yes—This is short notice---but with the heavy rains recently and needing to do some work before the busy July 4 Weekend---this seemed the best option available. Great River Classical Horsemanship Association (GRCHA) President Ann Bennett has planned a Work Day for Saturday, June 25. Everyone willing to work is asked to meet, ready to work, at 9 AM at the Upper Camp Ground (Weather permitting). Park in the Day Parking area at the back unless you are camping and have reserved a spot. Doug Moothart will lead the work crew for the volunteers and will have met with John Byrd on Friday. The list of possible projects below is subject to change and updating once Doug meets with John:
• Sort cans and bottles, and take to a recycle center. Bring your cans to recycle!

• Patrol campgrounds and trails for trash. Bring gloves, trash sacks or buckets to collect trash. (Dumpster at the campground for trash.)

• Patrol trails for downed trees, cut back brush or tree limbs, note any problems like washouts that need further rocking or diversions like water bars. This will be horseback only if trails open, otherwise you will be on foot. Need gloves, pruners, loppers, hand saws to do this work.

• Remove the old roofing material on the horse pens. Need crowbars, claw hammers to remove nails, bucket to put nails in, ladders to stand on. (Note: Need funds or donation of 138 treated 2x4’s 12 feet long to put new roof on.)

• Scrape and paint one out house (pit toilet) building at each campground. Bring ladder, gloves, scrapers, paint brushes and pans.

Bring gloves and the tools you have to work on such projects. Please mark all your tools clearly so we get all personal tools returned. Doug will bring a chain saw. . Ann Bennett has donated 5 gallons of gray paint.

You will be required to sign a DNR Liability Form before working. One is attached to this notice. Copies will be available when you get there if you have not already signed a form.. .

We will break at noon for lunch at the Upper Campground. Melissa Viviano will provide hot dogs, buns, mustard, ketchup, pickles, chips, and apples for lunch. Lunch will be a free will offering, and any money collected will go toward buying the new roofing 2x4's for the horse pens. Ann Bennett will donate a case of water and a jug of ice tea. Melissa can not attend so Dena McCulloch is volunteering to assist with lunch. Melissa would like a head count on Friday to buy supplies, so folks need to RSVP to Ann by noon on Friday if they expect to come work and join us for lunch. (See below.)

Working or riding after lunch will be a personal decision, dependent on weather, and dependent on work yet to be accomplished, and how much time you want to volunteer. Any effort is appreciated. We want to have fun, and stay safe. We are all volunteers, so we are happy for whatever time, treasure or talent you can donate.

If you expect to camp over the weekend, be sure to reserve a camping spot ahead, or take a chance and pay the overnight fee in the camp drop box.

Ann Bennett is hosting so contact her by email at windrushhill@farmtel.net to RSVP if you are coming or have questions, or call her home phone 319-986-2199. PLEASE RSVP BY NOON ON FRIDAY. If the work day is canceled due to weather (we don't plan to work outside if it is thundering and lightening!)--then Lora will e-mail everyone as soon as canceled but no later than 7:30 on Saturday. You can also call Ann to be sure the work day is not canceled. Call before 7:30 Sat or you can try her cell phone 319-217-1897 (but this does not usually work at Shimek.)

Volunteers already include: Ann Bennett, Lora Conrad, Doug Moothart, Bob and Marsha Achenbach, and Dena McCulloch. Everyone named here except John Byrd is a volunteer, just trying to do our part. We operate under the guidance of Shimek Area Forester John Byrd. We welcome anyone to help keep the Shimek trails open, maintained and beautiful for us all to enjoy. Come join us!

DNR Account for Shimek Equine Trails
Area Forester John Byrd has obtained approval to have a designated Shimek Equine Trails fund with DNR while we are establishing the legal Friends of Shimek group. Anyone wishing to donate money instead of materials can do so by sending a check made out to DNR with “For Shimek Trails” in the memo. Send the check to John Byrd, Area Forester, Shimek State Forest, 33653 Route J56, Farmington, IA 52626
