had an 04 sundowner 6 horse that we pulled for 2 years and couldn't tell any difference, except it showed the dirt worse.

A friend has a black trailer and I agree with whitewood, never really noticed a difference in temp but always notice a difference in cleanliness...the black trailer always looks dirty.

I agree with Whitewood as well. I bought a black trailer just to see and there is not a noticeable heat difference in either the interior of the horse compartment or the exterior skin. Definitely harder to keep clean.

ask yourself: do you think black cars are hotter than white cars?  There is your answer.

Mill finish shiny metal reaches a temp of 190 degrees in the summer sun, black is similar to that.

Look at any boat yard or marina. How many black boats do you see as compared to the white?

"I bought a black trailer just to see..........."

Wow - that's an expensive way to find out!!!! I wish I had that kind of money!

IMHO it would be easiest to go to a dealer on a sunny day, find 2 similar trailers - one white/one black - and stick a thermometer in them.

Pinkmouse:  We are a dealer which is why we had to bite the bullet and see. Obviously heat wasn't our only reason for purchasing a black trailer, we also wanted to see what the market was for them.

I don't know anything about boats, all I know is from firsthand observation on an 80+ degree day that I couldn't tell the difference.  Maybe I should have used a thermoter :

I forgot to add that it did surprise me because intuitively I thought it'd be much hotter.  Maybe you'd be able to tell a big difference if it was closer to 100.

had a 6' short wall that was lined and insulated from the factory and an a/c on top. Only overnighted in it a half a dozen times, but the a/c would freeze you out on a 100 degree day. We used it hard, probably put 70,000 miles on it and don't believe it was 1 degree warmer than the white skins we have or had. Had horses tied to it a lot, and the black also showed the horse damage much worse than white. Bottem half was extruted so that saved some.

while the interior of the black trailer may or may not be appreciably hotter than the interior of a white trailer (especially if insulated), the surface temp of a black surface will be way hotter than the surface temp of a black surface.

if you plan on TOUCHING the outside of your trailer (or if your horse bumps it with his tender nose), you may want to consider that as a factor.

of course if you live up here in the PacNW, having a passive solar heating surface may not be a bad thing ;)

Thanks for the input. My own thought would be that as long as it is shiny and reflective, it wouldn't have a lot of impact, but I don't own one. Came across one in a search and one person thought it would be hot inside.

I dont know about horse trailers,  BUT I do some drag racing, and sitting in a black car is MUCH hotter  MUCH HOTTER than sitting in a white or other less dark car.   Your trailer insulation should help with this quite a bit.    If I was hauling in a black trailer the roof would be white.
