My trailer has a butt bar behind the last horse to protect the door, a friends trailer has a strap which is a lot easier to use rather than fumbling around with a rigid bar and pin. The bar certainly seems more solid but the strap is more convinent...anyone ever have trouble with a strap?

My personal preference is for the bar because it is more solid and doesn't have the give of a strap The horse might test it once then quit. The strap has more give and the horse might keep pushing.
The purpose of the butt bar/strap is to keep the horse in in case the door flies open. Also to keep the horse from leaning on the door hard enough to pop it open.
If your horse is calm in the trailer and acustommed to it either would be okay.

The weakest part of either a bar, chain or strap is usually the attaching hardware. Most quality straps have a higher tensile strength than a chain. You can easily change from one type to another, if your trailer doesn't have dedicated attaching hardware.
