I just bought a 2000 Featherlite 3 horse slantload. I am planning on pulling the wheels and repacking the bearings and, if necessary, changing the brake pads. I wondered if one of the mechanics would tell me how much pad should there be left before they need to be replaced? Thank You.

What I have found is that the bonding (friction material to steel shoe) will let go way before the friction material is wore out. But if they get down to 1/8" thickness, I'd replace them.....and if you shop around you will find that the backing plate, with all new hardware and the shoes, isn't much more expensive than just the shoes....maybe $15/wheel more.

Replacing the backing plate, springs, shoes and all the hardware as cheap as the shoes alone, new magnets and everything.... R&R four mounting bolts and the brake wires and you're done. Don't forget to repace those wheel seals, most of them are a one time thing. Each side is different, there's right and left... NOTE: Left Hand = Drivers Side & Right Hand = Passenger Side
If you order for four wheels you should end up with two rights and two lefts..... Two different part numbers.

Thank You all for your help. Looks like there is 3/16" - 1/4" left on the brakes. I think I'm going to wait until next time I repack the bearings and replace the pads then. Thanks Again.
