I have been searching for quite some time now for a trailer and I am beginning to feel like what I want does not exist - or if it is, people are hanging on to it.  I even worked a bunch of overtime last year to double my trailer budget.  This is basically what I am looking for - is it unusual?

Top quality (like a 4 Star) 2H GN slant, aluminum, 3' to 5' SW, 7'6" tall, min of 7' inside width, walk thru door, slam latches, padded, drop down windows, WERM floor (I could add later, but prefer to have it already), stall vents, collapsable rear tack.

My search radius is 300 miles. Anything further would require using up too much vacation time to go and look at a bunch of trailers.   I have been searching HTW, CL, local ads, and every other trailer site I can find.  I have put out several requests on HTW - the main responses I received were 'here is the link to my inventory'

My plan is to use it as weekender.  I was looking at anything from a basic model to a fully equipped LQ. About 2 weeks ago I thought I finally found what I wanted (in my hometown!!!) but it was only 5 1/2 ft wide.

I had hoped to get more trailer by getting a used one - 10+ years would be OK.

Should I settle for a trailer that does not have everything I want? Or should I get a brand new, custom, bare bones trailer and add my weekender package later on?  Due to my current horse situation I need to get a trailer ASAP.  I had even thought of getting a cheap BP, but good (ie - safe/reliable) ones of those aren't easy to find either without killing my GN budget.

Thanks!!

I doubt if you will find something with a LQ with that small of a shortwall. A factory LQ will have much better resale that do it yourself and KOA campgrounds will not let a do it yourself camp there because they need to be certified. I think there are many more 3 horse available than 2 horse and I think you may need a longer SW to find something. Not sure how tall your horses are but you may have better luck witha  7' high also. Courious what your budget is to know what you expect for what $$

Actually, I am not really looking for a full LQ - I only want a weekender package.  But if the right trailer had showed up and had an LQ, I would have purchased it and removed some of those items I don't want.  I only have one horse, so I really do not need 2 extra stalls.  (I had briefly considered a 3H with a 1' or 2' SW and walled off the third stall into additional 'people' space)  The one extra stall on the 2H would have a stud divider and that is where I would have put all my extra stuff.

I need the extra height - I have a tall horse who also has a tendency to hold his head really high - that combination makes a taller trailer necessary.

My budget is a total of $20K (that includes any modifications I would have to make - like adding an awning and hi-ties).  I do not expect a top quality, fully equipped, late model LQ trailer for that money.  I was hoping to get an older, 2H weekender with the features I listed. A trailer with only a DR would also be fine - adding insulation and cabinets is no big deal - I know someone who does that stuff - and does top quality work.

Thanks shags  - I saw that trailer.  It does come close, but it is a stock trailer.  I really want to get drop down windows this time.  My current trailer is a stock 3H GN and I really want the ability to open the windows for the horse.

DLM....that looks like a nice trailer for a reasonable price indeed.   Pinkmouse:  there is also an 05 Hawk in the new listings that looks rather good too and is in your range of wants and needs.  Best wishes for finding what you want/need.

DLM - that is a very nice 3H trailer.

I know that there is a wealth of knowledge and experience on this board - I really am looking for your opinions:

Is this an unusual configuration i.e. - will I never find it or if I do get a custom trailer, will I never sell it when I finally decide to get rid of it?

On getting a custom trailer - are those of you who got a custom trailer - are you glad you did?  Was it worth the wait and $$?  Is it a major hassle?

Those of you who got pretty close and settled for something less - are you satisfied? Do you wish you had gone custom?

Thanks for all your input - I really appreciate it.

Since you are wanting something a little different, I would expand your search area. 300 miles is only 5 hours time. Expand your search area to 700 miles, see what you find, and then take a weekend to go get it or have it delivered. I live in AZ and found my trailer in Arkansas. they met me in Amarillo (12 hour drive) I drove Saturday bought the trailer, spent the night and was home by Sunday dinner! Saved me $8k!!

I saw in your blog that you had/have an ADAM trailer and my wife and I went to their factory here in Va and found they are very accomodating as to building to fit special needs or wants.Maybe they can do the one you want ?

If you have a long list of must haves and will not settle with something less, then you should consider a custom made trailer otherwise you will likely be regretting the purchase for a long time. On the other hand, if your list of needs was smaller and was willing to compromise on a few things (such as a 3 horse vs a 2 horse), you can usually find what you need used. For Example- I wanted fridge, sink and dinette...but I was willing to give and take on other matters such as ramp, managers etc...as it was I got the fridge, sink and dinette with no ramp or managers but I did get a AC and midtack. I am in Mi and the trailer was in ND.I asked for a variety of photos and if there was something else I needed to see, I just asked and they emailed me the photo. It was delivered by the dealer.

pinkmouse, I have your trailer!  Just joking, but my needs were similar to yours.  I have 6 foot SW LQ, 2 horse, 7 wide, no mangers, drop downs w/jail bars, rear bus, slam latches, stalls vents. Mine happens to be 7 tall with no pass through, but the dealer that I used has had several 7.6 high with pass throughs.  My trailer is a Featherlite, 8546 Model, and I have had it since 2005 and it has been a very good trailer.  My interior is a custom, but Featherlite makes a good small factory interior.  There are a mess of these 8546's and 8946's out there and they are priced right, like $20,000 on the older 8546 ones. You are right, the 2 horse trailers are harder to find and I ended up buying a new one as I live in a low density state, and LQ trailer pickings are slim. I am with others on getting a professionally done interior.  The RVIA sticker means something on resale.  Also, there is an advantage in getting a non custom interior in that, even in such a small LQ, everything is there:  AC, Toilet, shower, microwave, stove top, sink and refrigerator.  Perhaps you will not use them, but when it comes time to sell they can be an advantage.  I put TP in my microwave. Maybe another person would have the microwave as a "must have" whereas my must have is a stove top. When I bought my second trailer, I saw many absolutely beautiful trailers at right prices, but, no stove!!  Show stopper for me.  Many of the custom trailers will not suit a wide range of buyers.  Also, consider a wider shopping radius.  I have "purchased" two trailers long distance, one from a dealer and one from a private party.  I requested approximately 25-30 detailed digital photos (detailed bare floor, all exterior angles, detailed LQ, etc.)  and made an "as represented" deal over the phone. I will buy if what I saw and what was represented is correct.  No money exchanged hands.  I made all preparations to buy, like money and insurance, but did not close the deal.  I just drove the distance with the intention of buying and made the purchase after I inspected the trailer.  With the pictures, you can make pretty sure that the trailer is what you want before you make that drive. On both drives, I bought the trailers.

Pinkmouse, I too have the trailer you are looking for! I just bought it about 3 weeks ago now. Found it here on HTW. I did buy it out of my state, but it was a good deal with the warranty also! I was very picky too about what I wanted. This is an unfinished front, just what I was looking for 4' SW/ 8' LW, rear tack and tons of extras on it. I wasn't looking for this particular brand but it just fit and was what I wanted and the price was good!

It was hard getting pics of the inside front. The aluminum with light didn't work right, and couldn't get the whole inside in the pics too.

I did add a boot box to mine, it goes all the way across the goosneck bottom below, that gave me tons of storage. Husband and I will insulate, tongue and groove panel and  he is putting in more lighting in front and adding two 12v oulets inside, one for my fridge and one for dvd player, or computer so I can map my trips where I go. (I am into tracking and heavily planning my trail routes.)

I too am just a camper, and totally self sufficent with the trailer. I love this trailer and it tows fantastic, and my first aluminum so a big, big difference when towing for me....

I hope you find, what you're looking for, they are out there, you just have to look and be patient. These type of trailers the kind you are looking for sell quick I noticed. I sold my old steel 2h GN on here within one week of it being on HTW! It had a much smaller front, but lots of horse camping folks are looking for just that, small GN with weekender or basic in front to sleep in............

Thanks for the input!

I had decided to go the custom route, but after contacting 4 different trailer manufacterers, I realized that the economy must be picking up!  Despite numerous messages and emails, not one had the time to contact me.

As luck would have it, I was scouring the ads once again and found a nice, older 4 Star that had been garage kept for about 1/4 of my total budget.  It was in the middle of nowhere and belonged to a 90 yr old man who was finally getting out of the horse business.   It will make a great temporary hauler while I wait to find what I really want - I do not think I will lose any money when I try to sell it as I think it was way underpriced.  I figure with the new, high end trailer business doing so well, there will be more used trailers on the market to choose from.

Thanks again

Ok I am in! I am very anxious to price out the trailer that will totally suit your needs and am very confident that I can get it within your budget...all aluminum trailer (covered under a 7 yr warranty) with a weekender pkge! Shoot me a private message or better yet an email michele@buyshadow.com and lets see what we can put together. I think too... I have one on the lot that might work for you! Looking forward to hearing from you!
