I looking at purchasing a used trailer with a satellite system already installed. Can I use my chips from the receivers in my house or do I have to get new ones?

Not sure what "chips" you're talking about. All the trailers I've seen with satellites just meant there was a dish on the roof and pre-wired. You still had to provide a receiver. We don't have a roof dish on our trailer, I just setup a tripod unit and move the house receiver to the trailer when we want it.

Extra reciever around $125. A good adjustable tripod for the dish and a $5. per month fee from Dish for the reciever. There would be some object blocking the Roof satellite 99% of the time.

You can move the receiver with the "chip/access card" back and forth from house to trailer. But, the access card must match the serial # on the receiver. You can't take it out of the one in the house then stick it in the one in the trailer. I find it a PIA to move one back and forth. Just pay the extra $5 for additional receiver and be done with it. Some folks will leave their receivers in the trailer when they sale the trailer. If not, you can buy one off ebay for $10 and call in the serial number to get a new access card assigned to it. You can call the provider and have the access card put in your name. Not all rooftop satelites will access BOTH Directv & Dish. Some do just by changing receivers. My Bloomer has a upgraded one that can access either. But, my 4 Star can only do Directv, which is what my house is. Best way to find out is to get the satelite infoplus the reciever info and call in advance. I've learned from experience to not presume but to verify everything prior to purchase! I also carry a portable dish so that I can park anywhere and still get signal.

Just make sure you check with the provider before you purchase. You don't want to get a used receiver and find out the prior owner didn't pay the bill. If that happens you'll have some challenges getting the provider to activate it.
