Most likely horses sold at the referenced "sales" end up across the border at a Mexican slaughter house. Even in Virginia there are people who will buy any horse for almost nothing so the owner can get rid of them and once they have a full load ship them to Canada to slaughter. The final outcome of a horse reflects the values of the owner, be that euthanazia, slaugther or a bullet. These abandoned horses earlier would have gone to a local auction house and then on to slaughter. That was the outcome for many unwanted sport/race horses that were non-competitive.

I'd rather see a horse put down than see people do without. We don't know what the circumstances were for these people to abandon their horses but we do know its very tough out there for everyone. Feeding my kids is always a higher priority to feeding a horse. I am just thankful its never come to that and Lord willing never will. This is just another painful reminder of the folly of good intentions when slaughter was banned in the US.
