While doing my fall trailer wash, I noticed there are several spots where the caulk is failing on our trailer. It is a Bison w/LQ with a fiberglass roof - the area in question is where the fiberglass meets the painted aluminum - about 1' in from the sides of the roof. The original caulking is about 3" wide and the fiberglass overlays the aluminum. What product should we use and would I need to remove the old caulk?Thank you!Nan

You should remove as much of the original loose and dried caulking as possible. If there is any silicone caulking, it should all be removed. The area then should be cleaned and well dried. There are several sources of tapes that can be applied, as well as elastomeric products. As with any applied product, the proper surface preparation will ensure a long lasting repair.
The elastomeric products have a greater rate of expansion and contraction than most tapes. This is beneficial when dissimilar materials are joined together. I recently used this product on one of my trailers for this very reason. Some are also warrantied for as long as ten years.
