Last Friday when I got my trailer out of storage to get it ready to go on Saturday, I noticed my saddles had mold starting to form on them....Even the one I had stored in a saddle bag....I had the other covered with a clean brand new saddle blanket....The trailer is stored in a shed that doesn't leak and the dressing room doesn't leak either....Its got me wondering how this happened and how do I keep it from happening again??? The last time the trailer was used was last fall about this time of year and it was not raining out when I used it last so it wasn't put away wet....Any ideas???

Mold will grow if three conditions are met. Moisture, warmth, and food (your leather tack) Take away any one of the conditions and mold is controlled. I use the "Damp-rid" products during the warm seasons to help with the issue.

Thanks for the suggestions....I have never had this happen before and I have stored my tack in the dressing for a number of years and have never had this happen before....Will get some of that damp-rid....How often do you have to replace it and how much of it should I place in the dressing room??? I have a 95 WW three horse slant with a dressing room and no rear tack...

Damp-Rid is a chemical that absorbs moisture from the air. Usage depends on the amount of moisture in your closed area and the air circulation. When the flakes of chemical is used up, it becomes a liquid in the bottom of the container. I dump the liquid on my gravel drive way to help control dust (calcium chloride is used as a dust suppressant and ice melter on roads) and simply add more chemical.
