Well at first I laughed but its actually not that funny, moreso sad.   My future mother-in-law has a horse farm down here.  She just sold a horse to a friend that moved to Iowa and offered to deliver it for her.  She didnt want to take her GN for just one horse so she borrowed her daughter's 2 horse bumper.  The trailer hasnt been on the road in many years and nothing has been checked.  Theyve known about this haul for 5 months now and never bothered to do anything to the trailer.  They hooked it up last night at 6:00 and loaded the horse and left.  20 hour trip.  The trailer has 4 bald dry rotted tires, the truck has no brake controller, the trailer has NO running lights, God only knows if the floor is any good, along with the bearings.  They never wrapped the horse's legs up, She just said she was going to stop every 3 hours and let the horse out to graze.   Let the horse out of the trailer on the freeway??   ARE YOU KIDDING ME????   I mean everything was done so incorrectly.  If they make it there and back without any issues all I can say is God really does look out for idiots.

I feel sorry for the horse.  In  the words of Ron White, "you just can't fix stupid"!

A twenty hour ride in a 2 horse bumper pull? I would've taken the gooseneck, safer and more comfortable for the horse. That just doesn't make any sense at all. Then again, maybe she didn't want to put any wear and tear on her own trailer.

Well hopefully they don't mean they'll unload on the interstate.  Hopefully, they'll find a quiet place at a rest area or a gas station.  If they offload every three hours for a break, for walking around, drinking and grazing, that will be good for it.

As long as the floor is OK and the horse is calm, it could go OK.

Let us know when he gets there.

They will probably be passing right by our dealership on Interstate 80 (exit 93); so if they run into problems, we will be glad to help them out.  Sounds like that trailer is a good candidate for tires and service !!  We have outside pens and an arena to keep the horse need be.

Well it is proven.  God does take care of idiots.  They made it up there with the horse.  Took them 24 hours of driving.  They stopped every 2 hours to let the horse out.  Had problems everytime getting the horse back in the trailer  but that was it.  Trailer held together with no brakes, lights, and bald dryrotted tires.     They havent made the return trip yet.  Thatll be in 2 weeks.  So if anything happens Ill update everyone.   I really wish honestly (and I hope this is not evil of me) that they have some sort of issue on the way back.  A nice tire blow out or a ticket for running without lights.  Caus if they come back without any incident on the whole trip, they wouldnt of learned a damn thing.  They will just think everything they did was fine and probubly just do it again.  Im just shocked.  My trailers never leave the yard without a good checking over of EVERYTHING.    unreal.

He probably did not intend for it to sound like he was saying he hoped that ANYBODY gets hurt.but anyone that is that disregardful of their animal's safety, not to mention their own and others on the road around them, needs a wake up call and sometimes, learning the hard way is the only way it will stick with some folks.Like us:we knew that our '98 Sooner had the original tires on it prior to a 5-6 hour long trip on a holiday weekend, but, did we take the other trailer with new tires? Nope.Loaded to the gills because the 2H Sooner "had more room" (dressing room and rear tack) we head out with 2 horses.Going around state 60 at Springfield,MO,just as we went under the last overpass before the road splits to the west to Republic,or I-44,we hear something like a shotgun blast.Looks were exchanged as well as "What was THAT." we rolled the window down, knowing what THAT was.It was the product of our stupidity, and ignoring our instincts, was what THAT was,on the side of an interstate with a speed limit of 70MPH,at 9:30 PM on the Fri.of Memorial Day weekend. Thanks be that we were able to call for a nice Springfield PD officer to assist us to a safe place for a tire change.1 1/2 hours later we arrive, and, our Sat.AM that WOULD have been spent riding up in the Ozarks of SW MO was instead spent at the tire dealer's getting new tires.Like I said,'the hard way.'Lesson learned.PS: it is certainly not advisable for a woman or women to undertake a trip like that without a vehicle or trailer that is in good condition.Too many things can happen during a breakdown on the side of the road nowadays.

Jeesh Penejoe  lol chill   I have been the one on the side of the road.  It isnt often but even when you check everything over   things still go wrong.  A wake up call is exactly what I want for them.  But honestly she really is so dumb she would probably drag the trailer home even if a tire blew out.  Shes had her gooseneck and a bp  come unhooked from the truck because she forgot to latch the hitch.  I am just very thankful my GF doesnt take after her mom.

Buy her this for Christmas or her birthday and don't worry about it.

http://www.usrider.org/safety.html

I'm somewhat impressed that she unloaded that horse every two hours to let him walk around, relax, eat and drink. She probably drove slowly enough that a blow out wouldn't have been dangerous.

Some people are just more careful than others. I'd drive across country with an equipment trailer in the condition that she did, but I wouldn't want the worry of having to deal with a horse if something went wrong. She's not a worrier :) and there is good to be found in that.

It was very nice of jim bob to tell you about his dealership being able to help had she had problems.

Girl, that's a laugh, now!!! as to the "there's good in that" about someone that doesn't worry: there's a big gap between not worrying, and, being levelheaded and showing caution when treking around in a worn out trailer with a horse that you're delivering on someone else's behalf.Big difference.I don't worry BECAUSE I've checked my trailer and equipment beforehand.

Well, the horse got there safely and had been well taken care of from all we can tell from this thread - that's all I care about really.

I'm not really interested in negatively judging someone I don't know in a situation that I'm not fully informed about.

I thought the suggestion of usrider was a good one for this young man's future mother in law and perhaps his stepping back a little in his criticism of her is also something that migh serve him better - but it's none of my concern really since the horse is in good shape.

I often thought people who preach how well they service and take care of a trailer were really just trying to be better than others. The "I do this every six months" or " I wash it out after every trip" might make one feel superior but it really gets old. I recall driving a truck with slide in camper pulling a BR stock with no brakes for several years and never having a problem. We have hauled cattle in a rickity old trailer and made it just fine ( many trips! with 4 cows!). Who am I to judge if a trailer is road worthy? Sometimes stuff happens, tires blow, brakes can fail even IF you do everything right. The OP seems more disapponited that despite all the predictions of doom and gloom, everything worked out just fine. Seems like the old trailer was good enough for the trip so I think instead of whining about, maybe someone should apologise for doubting this woman. You really don't know everything.

WOW.  This wasnt a post meant to start an arguement.  I wasnt even trying to trash my mother in law. I just posted it to open up some peoples eyes about how some people trailer.  I guess Ive learned from this post that a bunch of people dont check anything out.  Maybe thats the norm.   I also find it sad that if you post enough on here they put a little "expert" next to your name.  Some farmbabes really dont deserve it.   This was the reason I left this website in the past.  I always seem to get attacked.  People seem to be very tough behind a keyboard.   But whatever, Im glad some people enjoyed the post.

the magic word there is : seem. There are a whole lot of ways to try to look better than others besides routine maintainence of a big investment horse trailer or truck,if that's where one's head is at.Matter of priorities,I'd say.

"I think instead of whining about, maybe someone should apologise for doubting this woman."

Let's see. This person endangered herself, everyone around her and the animal she transported. She ran a brakeless trailer after dark with no lights, and offered a complete disregard of safety, by ignoring the dilapidated condition of the trailer and its tires.

This person should be held to esteem and offered an apology? She and everyone who has a complete disrespect for fellow travelers, should be vilified. It is she, who should be apologizing to everyone, who by happen chance, ended up being anywhere near her.
