Hello all! I understand sliding windows on the hip side reduce the amount of air flow in horse trailers. Will installing fans in a trailer compensate for the lack of air flow or should a person insist on drop down windows on trailers used in warmer climates such as Texas or Arizona.

Here is my opinion and we live in Texas and has been over 100* with a heat index of 110*+ going on 14 days now. I never though about drop down windows on the hip side until I odered a new trailer a few years back and after having them I WILL NEVER OWN another trailer without them. This is one of the best money spent.

a lot of people dont like the "slat" look as a bus window is usually an option and then the drop downs are the option after that.... but the slats are like the drop downs in that they can channel more air through the trailer than the bus windows - they may be more of a hassle when taking the plexiglass in and out, but I would rather have either of those over the windows.--- fans would never be an option.

Hi - I just got a trailer with one drop on the hip. My horses have never experienced this before - I always had bus windows back there. Do you just leave the window open or do you put some type of screen over it? Any troubles with debris getting in?

I have a 3 slant horse with 3 hip drops... I travel with them down on hot days. Don't have any issue with the shavings blowing.
Funny story...Once while traveling, I looked in the mirror to see a car formerly close behind, swerving. Middle horse had hitched his butt to the window and let fly. Take that you tail-gater!

I have drop down windows on butt side..and they really seem to make a huge difference in the air flow...especially with the heat we are experiencing right now in the midwest...and I can honestly say, I will not have another trailer without them.

have seen the same thing,only,tail-gaiter backed off considerably after not even being able to be seen in mirrors. When we arrived at destination about 5 minutes later, horse had freshly urinated in trailer and it ran out the back.(didn't have shavings in for short trip.) LOL!

This could become the formulation of a new "Blue Moon" accessory. A small holding tank could be installed near the back of your trailer, complete with a remotely activated pump, and a discharge nozze aimed rearward at windscreen height. Filled with the proper materials, it could be used when unwelcomed guests are inspecting the number of rivets on your tail gate. I don't believe any affected vehicles would be inclined to follow as closely.

For the last trailer that I purchased, rear drop downs were on the must have list. I don't live in a smokin hot climate, but we do get 100+ days. One time I was stuck in some traffice for bit because of an accident. I was using my other trailer with the rear bus windows. The horses got pretty sweaty and that is when I made the new requirement for the rear drop downs and all future trailer purchases.

Careful... This is a class 1 felony in North Carolina !!
I think this is because the old NASCAR drivers had these certain devices to help them elude the "revenuers" Note the year first enacted ...1937 !!
? 20-136.? Smoke screens.

were in TX also and ordering the new trailer with drop downs, our hip side on the current trailer has slats and its great in the summer but in the winter when it can be 80deg one day and 25 the next the plexi glass is in and out in and out....The drop downs will be very nice and worth the money.

The only negative thing I've heard about drop hip windows (mine are bus.. wish I hadn't compromised) is that your shavings have a tendency to swirl around in the trailer when in transit. One lady I met says she doesn't drop hers for that reason.. The shaving "snowstorm" irritate her horses..... I will be putting in fans in an attempt to compensate.. It is just too stinking HOT here in the summer and I wont trailer unless I have to... It'd be nice to have windows that could be just pulled out with no problem and be replaced with drops.

I'm a second class citizen from PA. The stock car drivers used creative ways to enhance their performances. I'm sure leaking body fluids from a farm animal could be accurately directed, without "breaking the rules". This would be a no brainer for them to install.

It begs the question; can a farm's working animal be considered a device?????

I bet that an attorney would catch the phrase "owning for the PURPOSE" of discharging whatever.I sure don't own my horses just for the purpose of their discharge! LOL!
It was beyond my control, but,it sure was effective when it happened. We saw the guy turn on his wipers with windshield washer but didn't make the connection until we stopped.sure had a good laugh on him.

Well,I just reread it.It does say in "possession" of.But I am sure most judges would think this was stretching things just a bit, wouldn't you?

I had head drops, bus sliders at the hips, and a large drop window in the rear door of my previous 3H slant. I have a very hot natured draft cross, and as long as I dropped that rear door window (in addition to the others, of course), he never, ever came off the trailer hot....even on scorching days. That rear drop really helped pull the air through the trailer. Never had an issue to swirling shavings.

I have drops on the head and the hips of both of my current trailers. I have had trailers with the slider / fan combo. The fans helped some but not much. The drops on the hip will give more good cross ventilation with the head doors down at the same time. I have screens over all the windows on my 3H LQ. I would like to put them in the 4 star 4H also. With the screens, you still get cross ventilation when all the doors are dropped but don't have to worry about cigarettes, rocks or bugs flying in going down the road. Plus, they act like suncreens when parked in the sun.

My last several trailers have the drops on all sides and I've not had any problems with swirling shavings. I open everything up in the summer when its hot and close some of the drops if it cools off and start shutting windows in the winter when it gets cold. Going from, 2000 foot to over 10,000 foot I can see some pretty extreme air temps.
The hip side of my trailer. it has the same windows, drop down jail bars and screens as the head side.

Seems as if the older trailers such as 4Star,etc didn't even have the jail bar options on the dropdown headers. The windows were either closed up with the slider bus glass open,or,completely down, requiring screens.I see a lot of those.
Maybe this has always been an option on certain trailers, but,it seems like I see a lot of older model ones w/out the bars.

I would strongly suspect it's a cost issue. When Logan designed their current line of XT and XTR trailers, they held meetings with consumers and got feed back as to what they liked and disliked about trailers. The new design had the drops on both head and hip sides of the trailer. They used the same modular window, that they sources from a 3rd party supplier, (Hehr) That would simplify the design and engineering process. Since you would use the same size window in all horse compartment openings. Add to that they now have one part to inventory vs multiple window sizes and shapes. Probably one jig to use during the welding process. And they doubled their purchasing power since they were buying twice as many of the same windows.
