Just curious as to how often and the length of the regen on the GM & Dodge duallies clean their dpf during the regen process.
My 08 F450 goes into regen when towing about every 30 minutes for about 30 mins. Seems really excessive to me but FORD says its normal. My buddys 08 Dodge only regened 4 times in a year! My ford does that in a weekend! He also has a 2009 Dodge purchased in Aug that has only regened twice.
Would love to hear what the GM and the Dodges regen cycles are like..........I am not feeling the "love" from Ford.

Well I have officially had it with my 08 F450... trading it in for a dodge ASAP. Iam begining to believe all of the SHould be lemon lawed! Its going in the regen every 40 minutes then 20 out... it seems to have an electical problem... It is going bye bye

I have an o6 Duramax. Not to sound like to much of an idiot, but what are you guy's talking about when you say (REGEN). I've read the other posts too. I'm really confused. Maybe my truck is too old to do whatever it is you guy's are talking about. Educate me Please!

Pre 2008 model diesels do not have a regeneration process because they don't have Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF). The DPF is a technology that helps diesel trucks meet the 08+ EPA mandates for soot removal of diesel exhaust.
The 08+ Chevy/GMC Duramax/Ford Powerstroke/Dodge Cummins engines all have DPFs and use fuel injection to periodically burn off the soot collected by the DPF. This causes a noticeable drop in fuel economy.

As a matter of understanding, the EPA has been actively modifying the requirements for diesel engines. EGR systems and diesel oxidation catalysts were added several years ago, diesel was switched to a low-sulfur and later an ultra-low-sulfur formulation. Coming up for 2010 are further emissions reductions that will add urea tanks to new diesel trucks.
IMHO, some of these emissions requirements are very painful. I'm not pleased that reduction of soot costs us a significant amount of additional fuel use. It's especially bad for those whose driving environment doesn't allow regen cycles to complete and therefore spend a lot of their driving time in regen mode. It's one thing if there is appropriate technology to solve the problem, and legislation is required to force it into practice. It seems to me that the EPA is pushing this harder than the technology can practically support. It's not a fun time to be buying a new diesel truck, especially if you've owned one recently without all of this stuff strapped on.

Just be glad that you do have a 2006!! The "regen" trucks are the NBS trucks with the funky looking tail pipe.
2006 and early 2007, before the NBS, are probably the best of the Duramax powered HD, GM trucks.

I quess I'm one of the lucky ones. My 2008 F350 SC dually with a 4:10 rear end, only regens about every other tank of diesel. I'm usually on the highway long enough that it runs it's course in about 20 minutes. Usually drops the mileage on the computer about 1 mpg after regening. I haven't had any of the problems that I keep reading about on all of the Ford and Diesel Forums. I'm currently at about 37,000 miles and use it to tow a couple of times a week.
I get around 13.5 mpg empty and between 11-12 towing. Depending on what I'm towing... horse trailer, boat, flat bed with hay or tractor, it really doesn't seem to matter. I used to drive a Dodge 3500 dually with a V10 and only got 10 mpg empty and 7-8 mpg towing. I'm excited as I can be to be, getting 13.5mpg.

yikes, thanks for home schooling me. Yes, I'm glad I have a 2006. Looks like I'll be keeping it for a long time too. It just turned over 33,000 miles over the weekend. As you can see I don't drive it much. Thanks Guy's !!!

Our 2000 7.3 has been good to us, why I don't know. But so far so good. Maybe I will take really good care of it, with all these "improvements" I am reading about here....

I know why, it is because International built that enigne and sold it to Ford and was the best diesel engine Ford ever used. But now thanks to the EPA (or tree huggers) they are putting crap on these new trucks to make them more so-called "earth friendly".. Talk about horse poo!
So take really good care of your 7.3L and it will still be running when this other crap is dead and gone.

The 7.3's have a great fan base. IMHO the 6.4s and even the 6.0s are great engines if you've removed the emissions gear that the 7.3s don't have. Nearly all of the reliability and fuel economy issues with these engines relates in some way to the emissions gear.

ok, know I know I keeping my truck. One more question.... What is urea? I see on the new models they have an extra hole beside the fill hole for your fuel tank. Just another place to dump more money in?

Urea is an additive that gets injected into the exhaust of the newest diesels, further reducing emissions.

OMG, where was you a few months back when I was getting trashed for taking up for the 6.0 motors.
I have the same opinion on these as well, I will take a 6.0 truck any day, just becasue so many people have heard bad stories and do not know how to fix them the RIGHT way.....Plus they have a better transmission!

Well removing the EGR from the 6.0 is quite the chore, so I don't know that many people who are doing it. If you change head studs it's better. But underneath it all it's hardly a bad engine. It's the stock engine with all the emission crap that sucks.

That was my point a few months back when I was getting trashed about it.
I really like them and have done a hand full of delete kits on them and then they are even better. Have not done the head studs yet. Just lucky on that part. But I also noticed after the egr delete or by-pass I really have no need for a programmer any longer.
Any way, Thanks for speaking up about the 6.0's, glad to hear someone else feels the same way I do about them

Traded the 2008 F450 regen queen off for a brand spanking new 2010 Dodge dually4x4 crewcab with all the available bells & whistles. We drove the new truck over 500 miles in the last 3 days with absolutely no regens!!!! I think I am in love! Came home on less than 3/4 a tank. Love it! Love it Love it!
Ford regened 7 times with NO trailer in 420 miles to dealer.It took 2 full tanks of fuel to get there. Truck came out of last regen 20 miles before dealership. Told salesman and joked that I hope he got to experience the regen process at least once before the wholesaler picked it up. Salesman drove it 5 miles around town to lunch and between truck lots, then drove it home for the night. As soon as he left the city limitsand hit highway speeds , it went into regen with him!!! He called and said it sounded like it was about to take off and asked if he should contact the control tower! I told him Ford says it is working as designed, nothing wrong and that he should sign up for driving lessons! I asked if he drove it until it quit the regen and he laughed and said "oh hell no"!
I disclosed everything I went thru with that regen queen and can sleep well at night................Chapter closed.

We got the new body style crewcab with the 8ft bed. It has the exhaust brake, seats with Heat AND a/c, and ice coolers built into the floorboards under the mats. And of course all the other goodies like the sunroof, nice leather interior, backseat satellite tv, nav, backup camera..........and the list goes on.
I thought it would be hard to move out of the King Ranch interior but Dodges updated Laramie interior is pretty darn nice.
