Subject: Leaking Tack Room Door - Gutter Help?

As I posted in another thread, I took my 1997 Logan Eventer to a horse trailer restoration specialist in the Vancouver, WA area to have a number of issues addressed. One issue was that the trailer's tack room door was leaking. Given that we live in the wet Pacific NW and I use this trailer a few times a week, having a tack room door that leaks is not a can-live-with problem. :)

The trailer specialist replaced the weatherstripping around the door, which helped. However, I suspect the real problem is that the trailer door's aluminum gutter doesn't extend far enough out over the tack room door to keep the water from running down *inside* the door. This is more noticeable now with the new weatherstripping. The result is a door-mounted brush box full of water, which makes the brush box unusable, and mildew problems inside the tack room. When I pointed the gutter mismatch out to the trailer guy, he said that 3M makes a stick-on product that you can affix to the gutter to solve this problem. He promised to order one for me, but never did (just one of the many reasons I'm not going back there again).

This trailer guy is a real big talker, so I don't know whether the 3M thing is just BS or not. Anyone know what this is, and if so, if it's the right fix for the problem? If not, any ideas on how to fix this?

Thank you in advance for your advice!

A purchased "L" angle or bent sheet metal angle, caulked and affixed to the top of the door opening, will deflect any water from the seal area. Extend the angle past the width of the door by an inch or so on each side.

Drill a couple of holes in the bottom of the brush tray to drain any standing water. I had to do this on one of our trailers, after the door was left open during a down pour. Having to drill the holes, also helped my future memory, to then close the door before it started to rain.

I had a similar problem. The gutter profile was a "J" shape. The gutter above the door channeled the water to the side of the door. The water would then flow down the side of the trailer and flow into the trailer through the door side & bottom seal. My solution was to make a cut through the hook of the "J" about 1/4 inch from the end. Bending the hook down and out left a spout that directed the water away from the trailer wall. A dab of caulk at the end of the gutter after the spout made sure the water flowed to the spout in a heavy rain. As my trailer is always nose high a bit, the rear most gutter end was only done. Worked for me.

Here's a pic...
