I'm new to forums so I hope I've posted this in the right place and in the right way.

I need some advice about a trailer purchase (2 horse bumper pull). I'll be hauling a 16h 1200 horse. I've been weighing aluminum v/steel, slant load v/straight load. Are certain features must haves? I need a dressing room area to haul portable stalls etc for camping. Any recommendations or advice?

My only suggestion would be to make sure its insulated. When I was looking for a trailer it was a hot day. The uninsulated trailer was like a oven. The insulated one was fairly cool inside. Needless to say I bought an insulated trailer.

First- make sure you have enough truck to pull and to stop. IMO- minimum of 3/4 ton pickup. You can haul with a half ton and I have done it BUT you just have more power with a 3/4 and if you ever upgrade to something a bit larger, the 3/4 would still meet your needs. You might find that a BP isn't the best set up for camping. The DR room is limited and can get cramped real fast. You would have the pick up bed but thats not so good if it rains. I'd be shopping for a GN trailer with a dressing room or small LQ that can be unfinished if money is an issue. Sometimes buying more than what you need will pay off later as you will always find out that you really did need the space.I have no real preference with slants or straight loads. If you horse will load, it doesn't matter. Mangers in the horse area is another option that isn't a big deal to me but it does allow more storage space under them. Ramps- again purely optional but can be handy.Mush haves for me in a trailer ( for extended use not just for day trips) a nice bed, dining table, sink, fridge and microwave. Room to store a grill, cooler, lanterns, firewood and other camping supplies is a must and you'll figure out what you can and cannot live with as you go along.

I do have a 3/4 ton truck so I should be fine there. As for the slant v/straight load is there a difference in the way the trailer hauls i.e. weight distribution?

My opinion if you are hauling 1 horse and wanting to carry portable stalls.  I would buy a 2 or 3 horse slant load trailer, so I could carry stalls or whatever in the front stall and a horse in the last 2!  I would also check out the little CM Dakota slant load, you can get one in aluminum and they are nice little trailers.

I would recommend the straight load for the size horse you have unless he is short coupled. Otherwise go with a 3 horse slant to give you more room if you need it by removing a divider. You can add hooks to the side of either trailer to hang portable corrals if that's what you will be using to contain your horse while camping. That would give you more packing room in the trailer. Have fun.

Let's keep this forum a place to ask for or give information, free of sales pitches.  Providing information about a your specific product in response to a question is fine and quite acceptable.  There are lots of dealers and manufacturers who monitor this forum and and offer information and guidance, but do not go any further than correcting misinformation about their products.  You can always send a private message.

Well said. There are a few dealers that frequently abuse the no sales rule and others that abide by it. Those that are not in compliance are often chided for doing so, and have had a negative response as a result. This is just the opposite reaction they are trying to elicit.

Just my experience on the matter here.  We have been looking for a two horse trailer for day rides for some time.  We happened upon a brand that we really like and have had good experience with.  Well, the trailer we bought is a 2 horse slantwith a good size dressing room,  2002 model and used very little by one man/one horse.  We didn't want a slant but because of the price we felt we couldn't go wrong.  Well, the slants are really short - you need to watch the length here.  My SSH is l6.3 and quite long, my husbands Paint is 15.3 and quite fat.  So my horse barely has room to stand length wise and the fat horse gets the wider stall.  Another words, we are comprimising with our purchase.  Please make sure your big horse will fit!  My choice would be a two horse straight load with tack area.   Good luck!
