We have an aluminum LQ horsetrailer... 31' on the box(I originally thought it was 33'),16' shortwall, bath, storage, dinette, jacknife sofa, queen bed,big fridge, microv, cabinets, two awnings... 3 horse w/mangers and storage beneath...In accordance with the GVWR listed, we are ok. The combined loaded weight is 23,600#... What should we be pulling it with????? Anyone's genius opinion will be appreciated.

Hey gard, I think they wanted something to PULL the trailer with, not pull in the trailer!!!

Check on the Ford F-450, Dodge 4500's, GM 4500's or the ol' fathful International or Freightliners!

My opinion this trailer maybe alittle heavy for a 1-ton.

My old gas burner 8.1/Allison powered 3500 Chevrolet will pull that rig of yours.... Stopping it, well that's a whole nuther thang!!! I believe I would opt for a low mileage 2008-2010 used Ford F-450-550 or a Dodge 4500-5500... Big wheels bigger brakes, big power with a pickup size cab..... A low mileage Freightliner M2 or a Navistar/International 43-44-4700 wouldn't be too far out of the question... In some cases those MTD trucks are cheaper to buy and operate that the 450/4500 size trucks. I like the idea of being "over trucked"... And just to think that, I'm/are/was, a GM/Chevy man...

Gard, One of those EMD's would do the job, trick would be turning it around.... Imagine backing your trailer into your camper slot!!!

calamityj... Don't think you would want this year model "FORD", unless you got alot of friends that have a truck and don't mind getting their hands dirty... Some serious suspension problems!!! LOL!

Well straight up you asked a loaded question...

I have a very similar trailer.  32' box, 4 hrs, mangers, loaded up with every option Elite gives, heavy hickory cabinet interior, vaulted wood ceiling, 100 gal water, corian counter tops, and about 10' hanging storage, 78 couch, 2chairs, and table.  20gal gas with 5500 Onan.  HEAVY.  Squats a 1ton to the helper springs bone dry, thats without any propane or water.  God only knows how much it weighs.  I would guess theres at least 1k in tack/saddles/crap.

I am assuming we are near #16k without the horses.  A 1 ton will not stop this trailer.  I have proven that twice before buying the IH.  The IH stops it pretty dang good, proven that twice already.  Once last week on I-20 coming over MS river.  Construction halted at the bridge and backed up to the weigh station.  Man I stopped but just in time.  I couldnt even see the rear of the flatbed.  All I could see was the deck.  Horses didnt even wiggle much.

You could pull it if you wanted with 1 ton.  Just be careful and watch engine temp.  My duramax (2005) would run 235 degrees in March (70degree days) trying to pull my trailer.  I would have cooked it in July/August pulling 18-20hrs a day.

Give you another suggestion too..get some H rated/16 or 20 ply tires.  You will not have a problem unless the trailer isnt close to being level while pulling.  They will last for long time.

We have pulled it with an F-350 4x4 w/airbags and a chip... by the time you load the horses and some water in the tank, we are loaded up. I am trying to get anorexic so I could weigh 90# after a while... We have been looking at FL50/60's and International sportchassis trucks. I wish we had not already spent 40K on that pretty truck we just put a head gasket on. Ouch.

I cant speak for fords or dodges but the duramax cannot handle that type of load with a programmer.  I know I slipped two different trucks while pulling the same trailer.  Both had programmers.  One with predator the other with edge/attitude.  The pyrometer on the 05 would max out while going uphill if you were on the throttle.  Also I was using anywhere from 80-100% throttle while towing, or at least the attitude said so.  Another reason I say I would have cooked it when it got 100 degrees outside.  I honestly drive too fast sometimes while pulling, the duramax felt unsafe at anything over 65/70.  Felt like the trailer was pushing it and I guess in reality it was.  The IH doesnt feel that way at all.  I feel like I am pulling again and not in a runaway freight train.  It drives like a caddy at 75 on interstate, I have since leveled my trailer (cut some of tongue) to get balance on both axles.  I blew a 16ply tire with 125psi couple of weeks ago, makes a he!! of a boom when they go.  It was hot out, 100, highway had to have been 130+, and again I was driving too fast.

You can get a tailgater off  your tail when a tire goes.. he liked to have wrecked trying to get out from behind me.  I thought it was kinda funny.
