Broken Arrow campground in Custer. I've been to the Black Hills 5 times and this is the nicest place. They have a great campground and safe covered pens. There are miles of beautiful trails right out of camp. You can even ride to Custer Park from there. It is easy to get to and 5 minutes from town. We're going back in June.

We've been to the Black Hills with our horses every summer for several years. Everything above about Broken Arrow is so. We like Deerfield Lake Resort too, but our favorite is Hay Creek Ranch. Beautiful country, northern Hills, National Forest, unlimited riding, very remote, away from the tourists, off the beaten path, unbelievably accommodating and wonderful hosts.

I can't get the Broken Arrow website to work. I'm intereseted in the Balck hills area too and was reviewing the sites listed above. Are they still in business?

Here's the link to Broken Arrow: I just got on and it worked for me. Yes, they are in business. We have reservations for June.

Elkhaven, is okay. Just not as nice a campground and not as much riding.

I'd post pictures if I could figure out how to do it.

Is this a non-party kinda of campground? We like to stay away from the touristy areas and also those with limted ATVs.

It is not a rowdy place. People have a nice campfire and sit around and have a few drinks and a good time but I've never seen anyone out of hand. The horse campers are away from the other campers. I've never seen any ATV's there, not sure what you are wanting to know about them.

Stay at French Creek for the first half of your trip.  You can ride Custer State Park and see LOTS of wildlife.  They also have showers and water.  Then fill up with water and move to Iron Creek for the second half of your trip.  Iron Creek is more primitive and very private.  Both have corrals.

From Iron Creek you can ride to Harney Peak and Mount Rushmore.  If you feel adventurous, one person can move the rig and everyone else can ride from French Creek to Iron Creek (about 15 miles or so).  Or the people moving the rig can park, saddle up and go meet the rest of the group.  If you take the back roads, you can move the rig on the flat and avoid the steep winding hills.

If you want a shower while at Iron Creek, you can buy a good shower at the campground in the triangle as you head out of Custer.

And remember to buy a good topo map before you go.  Makes for better exploring!

Here's a few pics from Broken Arrow.

There is no bad place to camp in the Black Hills. Just depends on what you are looking for. If you camp on government ground you have to feed certified hay. it is hard to get reservations in Custer Park.

Pooperscooper, I'm hooked! Ready to go now. I see you live in MO. Do you drive straight through or stop half way somewhere to spend the night? According to Map Quest it is 12 hours from KC area. Farthest we ever traveled was 11 hours to Shawnee National Forest. Just wondering if Map Quest is over done on the hours.

Bjoes, Looks like we're just going to miss ya as we'll be leaving the 15th. You will love the riding.

Ponytammy, Might as well go with us. We're going to spend a few days at Ft. Robinson before we head up to Custer. We live in SE MO so it takes us a day and a half to get there. We've been up 29 and overnited at Union Grove park in Beresfored,SD and then on to Sioux Falls and across that way. Last 2 years we have went thru Nebraska. Much more scenic and although alot of 2 lanes they are good straight roads, little traffic and 65 miles an hour. We overnited at Broken Bow fairgrounds on the way out and Wabonasee State Park in Iowa, just a few miles from Nebraska City, on the way back.

A couple more pics.

Last year we took I-90 and stayed at the Cabela's store in Mitchell, SD.  They have free camping in the back with horse corrals.  Made a great place to spend the night, plus getting to shop at Cabela's.  From there I think it is about 5 hours on over to Custer.

Can someone explain the brand inspection rules again? I have health papers and a current coggins. Do I need to call the state to get a number to put on the health papers like you do when traveling to IL?

This should give you brand inspection info:

http://www.horseandmuletrails.com/brandinspection.htm

Remember the purpose of the brand inspection is to proof ownership prior to leaving the state. Brand inspection's sole purpose is to prevent theft.
You will need proof of purchase and/or ownership of the animals. If you do not have registration papers, another way of proofing ownership is with a recent photograph and have your vet write on the back of the photo that you are the owner. If you have registration papers and the horse is a solid color with no markings, it is a good idea to use the photo and vet signature methods also. In the photo of solid color horses try to find some distinguishing marks that show up in the photo.

Another note: All of the western states require a coggins and health papers. They also, no longer require the weigh stations to administer the regulations, BUT, each state usually has a point of entry. You are required to stop at these check points. Each state is a little different, so it is a good idea to ask the inspector at the point of entry if this state prefers for you to stop at the weigh stations.
