I dont have the weight of my trailer in front of me at the moment, but it is an older steel 2 horse bumper pull. Not a tiny WW trailer, but a ramp load 2 horse straight with 2 escape doors in the front, no tack room.
My husband is telling me an F150 can handle it with no problem, my mother is telling me we need a 1 ton. I'm a young woman who doesn't have experience hauling my own horses, and I don't want to get a vehicle that's not safe to pull our trailer with. As far as tack, I show halter horses, so we don't have saddles etc. in the trailer, and the horses are miniature horses, who weigh about 250 lbs each.
My husband did pull the trailer home with his fathers F150 with no brake controller, which is why he thinks it would be fine, but my mother would rather prefer I didn't even have horses, lol. I don't know if shes right, or just trying to discourage us from hauling our horses. I do know that if we get a f150 we should have a brake controller.
So please let me know if this is safe, and if any special precautions need taken.

I feel that an properly equipped F150 with the proper hitch, and a good brake controller should do a good job towing that steel two horse trailer. If it's an older used trailer, you may want to have the wheel bearings inspected and repacked with grease, along with having the brakes inspected and manually adjusted before hauling with it. Check the build date on the tires, if they are five years old or older I would suggest you replace them. They may "look brand new", but if they're old, they are dry rotting and cracking. Load it up with horses and gear, hit the highway and you'll inevitably going to have a blowout and or possibly an accident. If this trailer has mats, you may want to pull them out, wash and inspect the floor boards for rot, cracks and or broken boards and trailer frame structure..... If you'll check theses things before hand, then your mother can rest assured you've done everything you possibly can to insure safe travel for you, your husband and the horses that she would rather you didn't have.... Good luck with your new toys!!!

I have a 16 ft bumper steel stock trailer. My son also has a f-150 and has hauled this trailer with two horses in it. I put the QH in the front section and the draft cross over the axels.
