Little rat terrier dog and I went out to the horse barn this morning to do chores and I saw him run towards the hay barn with his hair raised up.... thought oh he is after a cat. Then I saw him high tail it back towards me looking every so often behind him. I thought "you big sissy" letting a cat chase you, then I realized it was a skunk.

Thinking the skunk would turn when he saw me as  I shouted at it. Nope it kept coming and chased me and my dog on to the porch. I ran in the house, grabbed the 22 and headed back out to fire a warning shot to get it to leave. Hubby came out asking me what I was shooting at and I told him a psycho skunk. He didn't believe me when I told him it will chase you. He got chased back on to the porch too.

Unfortunately my husband thinks he is a big game hunter and the skunk meet his end right in my flower bed next to the house. PHEW!!! The whole house reeks right now. Odd thing was the skunk didn't flinch at the warning shot, just kept on coming towards us. Not sure if it was rabid, distemper or had babies somewhere, but it couldn't have a den close by sense we frequently mow the pastures and lots of activity around the barns. The skunk got the last word in though with the aroma left behind in my flowers.

Poured bleach mixed with dish detergent and baking soda to help neutralize the odor, but it is still there. Looking forward to the wind turning south away from the house - hopefully SOON.

You need to have the skunk sent off for a rabies check, for you, the dog and the horses sakes (cats too!)  This is quite likely, unfortunetely.

Agreed. We have a skunk in our yard almost every night, and,it won't hang around once it sees us.
We had our horses vacinated for rabies this year because of the rise in cases of rabies in horses, don't want to take any chances.

Skunks are usually nocturnal and if you see one out in the daytime it usually means something is wrong.  Unless it was real early and he was just getting in from a late nite he is probably rabid.
