Let me first state that I own an Icelandic Horse and I do NOT support Ice Tolts! IMHO....Ice Tolts are inhumane and abusive to the horse's body. Can you imgaine riding your horse at 20 mph on ice?

Thank goodness that Fjölnir Thorgeirsson was there to help get all the ponies out of the pond. Kudos to him!

Regardless how you feel about the event, you have to give these people credit for jumping in the water to get their horses out. Good thing it was a relatively shallow pond. I think they care about their horses very much and showed it by staying with their horses.
Sounds like a lot of thought was put into the ice, measuring it and marking the path. Seems like a freak accident, but ice can be unpredictable and I agree, riding on it doesn't seem like a great idea. However in those countries that get lots of ice, cold and snow, having any kind of events on the ice is not an uncommon thing.
I'll tell you the one rider that didn't fall through the ice must have had a bunch of good karma saved up before hand.

I've seen all I want of ice around here for a while,at least until summertime. All it did was knock about 200,000 in our state out of power.I'm sure not going to ride a horse out on it.I personally like having something solid under me if I'm going to be on horseback.

And no,I can't imagine riding my horse on ice at any speed.Inhumane,abusive.and not too smart.
