Boy, oh boy is the vet making money off me today.  First had yearling colt scheduled to go in to get gelded.  Not a problem, then show steer has possible fractured leg, x-ray will determine that.  Anyone want beef?     Then go to take animals to vet and find my German Shepherd has snuck out and got into a fight.  His ear is all torn up.  Sticker shock for sure when I go to pick them up this evening.  Things happen in threes.  Vet said if I bring in a forth I get the door prize. Yeah, wish it was bring in 3 get one free.  Let you know what my outcome is.  I do know that the colt is fine on that procedure, they called and let me know on him.

I swear very time we have the vet out for one thing I'm guarantee that I will be having at least 2 more vet calls and 1 of them will be after hours or a Sun nite. It seems like the horse like the vet and just want to see them again and again. One routine calls always turns into more.

I managed to make it almost a year without having my horse vet out.  A new record!  But, then spent about $1000 with him in two months.  Spent a quite a bit on the small animals this past year, too, and still have a boxer that needs neutering.  It sure doesn't take much to run up a big bill.  Good luck!

Thought I was the only one who helps pay for my vets week long vacations to warm destinations and cruises! But it sure is nice knowing you have a vet you can count on when he/she is needed. Hope all is well with your critters.

Well I brought everyone home last night.  Now I just have to keep everyones meds straight and keep on top of treatments.  The horse, stall rest today, then light exercise and antibotics.  The show steer, no fracture, DSMO, Banamine injections and water therapy.  Thank God we have been having beautiful weather highs average 70's.  The German Shepherd,  the vet did stiches as well as he could.  I couldn't see his ear, his head is all bandaged up in red vet wrap.  Antibotics and change bandages every day for a week.  I can take out the stiches in 10 to 14 days.  Still have no idea the cost for all of this, and this vet is great about working with you setting up payments.

sounds like you're gonna need 'em.  I agree everything seems to happen in 3's.. but with us, it's usually kid, kid, horse, or husband, kid, horse.. Our dogs (so far..knock on wood) are usually the  luckiest of us all.

I have been extremely lucky the last year or so. Other than having my dog spayed and my horse's yearly shots, no vet bills! Hope it stays that way for the next year or two, or three, or....

NM riderwe had a great time, 80 degree weather, ocean view condo, slept with the doors open very nite to hear the surf and our college boys had a great time also. Taking a red eye home on a smaller plane than what we flew over on was not fun and getting readjusted to the time change( 4hour difference) and going back to work the next day was tough. Hate the cold we are having, -19 this morning, but hopefully we can go back again to Maui just to relax, we kept every busy doing all the tourist things. Maui is a great laid back island to visit, but you better bring lots of money it is not cheap. I keep forgetting to ask my dad if he knows any of your relatives. I will have to remember the next time I see him.

Well, let me tell you my short story of "my vet making money off me"

1st - horse got a puncture wound on back fetlock, after spending $700 to determine (over a 50 day period) that the joint was septic, I had to put him down.

2nd - Purchased a new coming 2 year old.  He needed to be gelded.  Vet came out, dropped him to find that he was cryptorchid...needed surgery to get both testicals.  Came home gelded, but at a cost of $637.

3rd - New horse, while convalescing, jumped over a priefter round-pen panel...cleared it, but after he came down on the other side got his back feet caught in the top of the panel...shaved all the hair off his legs and bruised the cannon bones really bad.  This was about a week after he was castrated

4th - Had vet come out and put horse on antibiotics because his back legs were so swollen...probably not necessary, but I'm now a freak about any swelling since I lost my other horse to a septic joint.

5th - A few days later, about a month after his surgery, he colics on a freezing night in Iowa during a blizzard.  It was zero outside.  Had to take him to the emergency clinic.  Fortunately he pulled through without surgery.  Cost: $555 for the vet stay

6th - horse got caught in a corner by another horse and he ended up running over the wheelbarrow.  The wheelbarrow lost, but the horse ended up cutting up all four legs.

7th - Finally he's not swollen and not sore... but no.  My other yearling was laying right next to him and while getting up stepped on this horse's back pastern.  He's now really sore again and swollen. I see another vet bill in the making.  My husband is now questioning whether the west was really won with the help of these delicate creatures.

Will I ever make it to spring?  Natalee

This has just been a bad year for vet/dr bills.  Well last year was!  $8200 for 3 horses colicing (one sugury) and youngest daughter had and ear infections/strep throat like you wouldn't believe.  14 Dr's visits in 4 months.....

Hubby would like to take us all to the auction.....

Look at it this way, you are supporting the economy. Even if it's mostly your Vets economy. And yes I've had mine out this year too, but was fortunate, not as bad as I had thought and now am stocked up on bute and eye ointment for my old guy.

Last week we got a real warm day in the 70s.After cold. I hate it because of colic .Well sure enough had a coming two year old colic on a round bale. Plugged up! Darn Bermuda grass hay HATE IT! Vets here call it KILLER hay .Vet out,all the usual stuff .While doing that a coming three year old in the pasture with NO Bermuda was down and moaning .Not plugged up .Pooping ok .Some drugs, fluids poured down her and was ok in a few hours. The PLUGGED up one finally pooped 8 hours later. Now she's ok .But call him out on one and darn if another one didn't colic. I'm really tired of horses .What a pain.

That is what mine coliced on.  3 plugged up, one bad enough for sugury.   Where I grew up all we fed was the bermuda and I'd never had a problem.

Bermuda hay.Bad stuff. My vet refuses to buy any hay with Bermuda in it.He buys winter rye in the spring and enough to keep 60 head of warmbloods fed the whole year.I try to alwys get comon grass hay. Some fesque, glover, bermuda, orchard grass and grab grass. But not straight bermuda.Cold to warm does it every time also.Vets get hopping on those days.

Have had 2 of mine colic as well. And one had to get stitches after gashing his face (who knows how). I agree it does have something to do with the weather changing as well. Bring on the Spring!!
