How can you not imagine this happening? If people will abandon their children, even some into their teens because they can no longer care or deal with them, what's not to imagine about them abandoning their horses?
Dogs and cats have been abandoned for years and years. Remember the feral horses of Africa which are descended from fine thoroughbreds imported and then abondoned by their owner as they fled the continent? They have managed to survive (barely) and have evolved into a wild breed which is in a state of continual migration between areas of forage.

Not to sound insensative but bullets from a person with a responsible aim would have been more humane. People who think these animals will adapt say this to themselves so they can justify abandoning them. Closing the slaughter houses combined with economic hardship are the main reasons, I believe. We need to think before we decide to breed. We need to think before we decide to own. We have lost respect for the horse, how sad.

Not surprised. It is going to get worse before it gets better. It will take time but this to will balance out. I just hope we as horse owners make decisions that in time will benefit the whole outcome.

I said "I can't imagine" as more of an exclamation rather than not being TRULY able to imagine.Hey,if you want to get into the fine details,in a country that allows the murder of unborn children at a rate of about 1 million a year, yeah,I CAN imagine.I can't see such a country really giving a rat's hoot in H*** about horses and cats/dogs being cast aside myself. So yeah,I should have said I CAN imagine. Our horses mean so much to me,who never had kids, that it is very hard for me to imagine myself doing such a thing.Does that sound better?

We have all our dogs and cats taken care of. We had our young stud gelded. Our vet said "I would do all the mares too but that is a major operation." He must have seem to much or had a bad day. Sometimes you just got to forgive the person who sees c--p all the time. Marla - we might just need to put up signs that say "We practice population control - do you?" That might make people think.

Wait a minute!!!!! You're telling me the best a $34 billion a year industry can come up with is a sign that states "WE Practice Population Control! Do You?" Check out what other organizations are doing to help out thier cause at AnimalRescueSite.com . While you're at it "Click to Give" it may help out some needy horses. It doesn't cost a thing. While you're there shop alittle bit you might find something you like.

CRGirl, I understand how you meant it.. no offense intended.......... Marla, Amen sista!! We also have all of our creatures fixed as well except my mares. As much as I'd love to raise a baby, It took me too long to sell my gelding and my daughter's pony mare (the pony at a HUGE loss, I might add) to seriously want to breed for more.

Love the website and clicked to feed the animals. I also like the PAWS glass oranament. I also help CANTER. The barn received 5 black kittens from a guy who said they were just left in an abandoned trailer. One got adopted and now we have 4 barn cats. This year we had 5 young rescued horses - owner just left them in a field (wild as can be). The rescue groups ask the barn if we had any room. They were worked on and have been adopted by people. After you see animals come and go. You just try to help out when you can.

Let's see, the 2 female cats are spayed, one from a mom found on the side of the road, and one that had to be hand raised due to a friends cat who was badly injured before giving birth, and could not nurse her 3 kittens, and one (now nuetered) dumped as a kitten on the side of a very barren stretch of road in 100+ temperatures. Then the spayed female Aussie from the herding dog rescue, and the wonderful older spayed heeler one day from euthanasia, and the nuetered pup from the man whose wife died and moved, not able to take pups with him. Of course 5 female mules (naturally sterile!) and 2 ancient AQHA geldings ...... all of them have a story, and all of them are loved and cared for, and none of them will contribute to the problem. Amen, population control across the board.......as, on a particularly pointed bumper sticker I saw, birth control is much less expensive than welfare!

Well many of us would have a hard time putting a bullet in the head of a best friend just because he/she's not convenient anymore. Frankly would worry about anyone who would put a bullet in the head of a healthy horse, especially one they say they love. Even if slaughter existed the economy, not horse slaughter has made this a larger problem. After all, if they can't bring themselves to put a bullet in their horses head, they are not likely to be any happier or willing to send them to slaughter. Granted I don't think turning them loose to fend for themselves is a good option either. Then again I don't know how anyone who has worked with, competed with, or recreated with a horse for a number of years can send that horse to slaughter when no longer convenient to their ego and/or pocket book. Anyone else notice how fuel prices jumped up as soon as the Christmas shopping season ended? Now that's way to convenient if you ask me.
It's bad enough some of the big name breeders are still churning them out, it certainly doesn't help when people like this decide to go into the breeding business without a good or intelligent plan to breed good or better quality horses. http://www.cracres.com/ As I suggested on Fugly they should have spent the money on some english and grammar classe.

About that spelling. I have to proof read everything I write, not because I can't spell, but because my brain works faster than my fingers can type. I used to write, edit, and publish the college newspaper for the local communinity college.I also wrote a weekly column for the regular newspaper. When typing the copy I had to close my eyes and ignore the spell-check beeps from my computer. Later I would go back and correct the spelling. That worked better for me than slowing my thoughts down to the speed of my typing.

It's the opposite for me.My fingers work faster than my brain does nowadays. To a degree that has always been true of my mouth. It tends to work faster, also.
