I have a collapsible rear tack and like it just fine but I do have a problem when my horse(s) pee in the trailer because the pee runs through the rear tack floor. So I have learned not to put anything on the floor of the rear tack. Other than putting down shavings for every trip, does anybody have any suggestions for stopping the pee from running through the tack part? I do put down shavings for long trips but I have one horse who pretty much pees in the trailer *everytime* he's in it, even for short rides. I've thought about cutting the trailer mat so that there is a crack for the pee to run out before it gets to the tack part...would that work? Of course, then I will have that small piece of "loose" mat whenever I collapse the rear tack. Think that would cause any problems with hauling horses? Thanks!

Why use shavings only on long trips? If you have a horse that 'pees' even on the short trips, sounds like it is even more important to use them every time. Wet rubber is slippery, I dont haul without shavings.

I built a treated wood floor to go in my tack area 2x2 runners with 1/2 plywood surface to allow the pee to run under and out the back. I keep the tack floor full of stuff and really need that area. I alos pull the wood out everytime I clean the trailer and pressure that area also. I have never used shavings on any trip. The mats in my Sundowner trailer dosen't get slipperly when wet and when we get to where we are going I have a small Karcher pressure washer and I wash out the horse area of the trailer. My shower is in the corner at the back door beside the tack area.
It looks like I better get the trailer ready to roll we start the trail ride season 3/14 thru 3/16 down at Manchester Trail ride in South Carolina then up to Love Valley the next weekend for Easter.

I got one of those noodle things for swimming and cut a piece long enough to fit under the gap. Then I cut it in strips and shoved it in the gap. It's not perfect but it helps and is cheap, but I use shavings too.

I insisted mine have a permanent rear tack-no pee problems here. But I'm glad to hear the replies, because I'm beginning to look and it is hard to find permanent rear tacks.

Like Terri I have not noticed a problem. My LoganCoach has built in gaps between the aluminum planks so it drains straight down and doesn't run back. And the aluminum planks are coated in Vortex ( a rhino liner kind of stuff) So they are non-slip, even when wet.
But I think the idea of adding a raised floor is great. I'd probably build it out of Rumber or Trex vs wood. In fact you could probably just cut some Trex 1x6" or 1x12" wide planks to fit the exact area and just set them in place. That would hold you up 1" off the floor. If you wanted to tie them together. A couple of pieces of Nylon webbing, (Like seat belt material) stapled across the bottom or top/bottom would hold them together.
If you wanted to add some ventilation. Place a piece of Spun glass ( lake a Dixie Midnight no sweat saddle pad) under the trex. It's about 3/8" thick and water, pee and air would move through it with out you having to lift the trext out.

Wow, how things change....awhile back, when someone was asking what you prefered - solid or collapsible tack & why - my comment was that I have had the collapsible in my last 2 trailers & DON'T like it. The reason was because of the urine running in to the tack floor OR if I had shavings, then the shavings were always coming under too & then sticking to everything. I got "jumped on" a bunch, saying THAT was NOT a problem!! LOL So it's nice to know I am not the only one now that doesn't like that! I do a real cheap, but effective temporary fix - I put rolled up xlg garbage bags, stuffed under the tack walls & then duct tape them down/under. Works good & once again, another use for duct tape!

I did the same thing Tresvolte & Mandi/Abby did. I cheaped out though. I bought a package of interlocking mats at wal-mart - the kind you use to put gym equipment on. I took one and cut it to fit the rear tack, it was really easy to cut, I believe I just used a box cutter. I put this mat on top of the regular floor mats. So now the pee can't get past it into the tack area.
I also thought of the noodle thing as longearsrule did. I shoved strips of noodles in the crack between the floor and the sides of the trailer- I found that wet shavings and manure would get trapped in there so I filled the gap.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think what I'll do is just put another piece of mat on top of the mat in the tack area. That should work fine and solve my problem. This forum is GREAT!!! 53

You're right! I wouldn't sell my geldings. But out of curiosity, how would getting mares help the pee problem. Mares still pee and their pee would still run through my tack compartment wouldn't it?

Mares pee further back, but I don't know that switching sexes would do much good. The first time you made a turn or the road curved it would still run across the trailer.

I bought a piece of rubber weather stripping at the local lumber yard and attached it on the horse side. Stops the pee and the shavings. When I want to move the collapsible tack, it slides all the shavings with it. Saw it on a trailer while trailer shopping. Really works well.

The mares I've dealt with were WAY more likely to pee in the trailer than my prissy geldings. I have one that REFUSES to pee in the trailer and the other rarely goes. I think everytime I haul a mare, she has to pee.

My mare both pees and poops within minutes of getting in the trailer... Often before I even get on the road... She's also like that in the barn isle...I guess it's a girl thingg.. I dunno.. maybe she's "marking her territory".. LOL!
