This 2006 Shadow 723 Pro Series 2+1 with Dressing Room just came in for us to show as a private sale. It’s been stored inside and it shows. The exterior of this trailer is nearly indistinguishable from new! The interior’s been looked after as well, but the exterior is spectacular. Used 2+1s don’t often come on the market and this one’s particularly nice. The owner's horses are retired and the trailer hasn’t been used much in recent years, so it’s time for it to go to a new home.
The 723 designation refers to the near 7’ body width (6'9" actually) and 23’ body length. The 23’ floor length includes 19’ for the horses and approximately 4’ for the dressing room. As a 2+1, it has 2 straight stalls plus a box stall and the box stall in this one is a generous 8.5 feet (compare to 7 to 8 feet on many 2+1s). The 7'6" body height offers great room even for larger horses. The side ramp is 5’ wide and side and rear ramps are 4.5’ tall (compare to 4’ on many trailers). There's a pass door for convenient movement between the horse area and dressing room.
If you do much trailering without an assistant, a true 2+1 such as this (that is, one with an appropriately large box stall) is a great choice. Lead the first horse in through the side ramp, back him/her into his/her stall and put up the chest bar. Do the same with a second horse. Close the box stall divider and then lead your third horse into the box stall. In a slant load, if you want to unload one of the forward horses, you usually have to unload the rear horses first. With a 2+1, you can load or unload any of the horses independently. There’s a nice spring assist on each ramp and as we indicated earlier, these ramps are extra tall at 4.5’ for a more comfortable incline. The ramp mats have a nubby texture that offers very good grip.
Whereas slant loads are typically sized for smaller breeds, with a 2+1, you can carry 3 large horses. A 2+1 is a great in-between size. It’s roomier and more versatile than a small trailer, but is easier to handle than a head-to-head or similar large trailer.
Here are some of the things that make this 2+1 so versatile - It has a removable stud panel below the straight stall divider and there’s an easily removable head divider as well. If you want to carry a couple of horses or mares and foals in box stalls, you can do that, too. Just remove the stall divider and post (quick & easy), giving you a rear box stall of about 10.5’ and that larger-than-typical front box of 8.5’.
This is a Shadow Pro Series model, and at the time this one was built, that meant that the walls in the horse area are insulated and lined in white aluminum. The ceiling is lined & insulated for the entire length of the trailer. The lining & insulation contribute to a quiet and comfortable interior. This one has the standard vents over the straight stalls and an additional pair of vents was specified over the box stall. It has plenty of windows for great light and ventilation and the window in the escape door is a large drop feed (it slides open and/or drops down). You can drop that window while leaving the window guard up, offering even more ventilation while keeping your horse from sticking his head out the window. The escape door is a generous 40” wide and there’s a pass door between the horse area and dressing room.
Up in the dressing room, there are two adjustable-height saddle racks on a swing out mount and 10 bridle hooks. There’s a lockable door with large window and a couple of large windows in the upper gooseneck area, and that upper area offers plenty of storage.
Other nice touches on this Shadow include running boards on both sides for convenient ingress and egress and an aluminum water tank tucked up under the gooseneck. If we recall correctly, it’s a 25 gallon tank and the spigot is located low on the gusset so you don’t waste water while figuring out where to place the bucket. This trailer has an aluminum frame and skin and the floor consists of extruded aluminum planks with integrated I-Beam cross members. In recent years, Shadow has gone to leaf spring suspension, but this one has torsion axles with all-wheel independent suspension, all-wheel electric brakes and 16” Load Range E radial tires (including spare). Running lights are bright, reliable LEDs.
