This 1995 Kiefer Built 3H Slant with weekender package just came in for us to show as a private sale. It’s clean and well-equipped and at an asking price of $9800, it’s very affordable.
This is an aluminum trailer – extruded aluminum sides, aluminum frame and extruded aluminum plank floor. It's stoutly built. By our tape, the LQ is 7.5’ on the short wall and 10.5’ on the long wall. They fit a nice LQ package in those dimensions. We measure a floor length of 20 feet, so it’s a manageable size to go with that manageable price. Body width is 6'8" and interior height in the horse area is about 7'1" from floor mat to ceiling.
The exterior was cleaned just before the trailer arrived and it shows. Much of the exterior gleams. We really like the engine-turned aluminum header extrusions. (For those of you not familiar with engine turning or "jeweling," it’s those neat overlapping circles at the top of each exterior wall. It’s a touch you don’t often see these days, probably because of the cost,) The interior’s been nicely kept as well.
As we said in the intro, this one’s 20 feet on the floor and they fit a lot in that space. The horse area has 3 slant stalls with solidly-built drop feed windows (not the flimsy modular windows you see on many recent trailers), an escape door on the first stall, a vent over each stall and a well-equipped collapsible rear tack.
The 7.5’ short wall / 10.5’ long wall weekender LQ is well equipped, with a nice-sized kitchen, plenty of storage, a settee and a bed with thick mattress up in the gooseneck. Even farther up (as on the roof), there’s an air conditioner with heat strip. The kitchen area has a 2-burner stove with range hood, sink, refrigerator and cabinets. There's also a TV and sound system.
For a trailer that’s so compact overall, this one has a surprisingly spacious bathroom. It has a separate toilet and shower, vanity and mirrored cabinet. The shower base is large and deep and there’s even a seat built into one end. If you’re sore at the end of the day, have a seat while you take a nice warm shower. We took a look underneath and saw good-sized black- and gray-water holding tanks for the plumbing system.
The interior accommodations are supplemented nicely by the exterior living space under the 16’ awning. That’s bigger than we usually see on a trailer this size.
The collapsible rear tack has 4 large padded swing-out saddle racks, a brush tray and several bridle hooks. Sharp-eyed readers may have noticed the large red thing on the floor in the tack. That’s a hydraulic jack of the sort you’d use in the garage. You hope you don’t need to change a tire, but if you do, this trailer has that jack that’s more than up to the task (and there’s a spare tire up under the gooseneck). The other thing you’ll find under the gooseneck is an electric jack. At hitching and unhitching time, just flip the switch to raise or lower the trailer. A new battery was installed the day before the trailer was brought in. This Kiefer Built rides on torsion axles and 16” radial tires with stainless steel wheel covers.
