This lightly used 2018 Shadow straight load LQ came in recently for us to show as a private sale. This trailer offers the best of both worlds - the straight stalls accommodate large horses comfortably, but with a floor length of just 23 feet, it’s compact and easy to handle. The multi-purpose mid storage area and side ramp make this a very versatile trailer.
Regarding the light usage, the owner made a couple of trips from Maryland to Kentucky where the LQ was used for 5 days each trip. Otherwise, it’s done some light local running. It’s estimated to have less than 4000 miles and shows very well. We call it primarily a 2-horse trailer, but with a side ramp and a good-sized space forward of the box stall doors, the space that’s normally used for tack storage could accommodate a small horse or pony in a pinch.
Even though this Shadow has large-horse-friendly straight stalls, the living quarters benefit from the efficient packaging made possible by a slant rear wall. If you want decent living space in a straight-wall LQ, the LQ usually has to be at least 10-11’. Then you have to make space for tack and before you know it, you’re looking at a floor length approaching 30 feet. The LQ in this one is approximately 7’ on the short wall and 11’ on the long wall. It has a comfortable floor plan and that slant rear wall makes side unloading and the mid storage possible in a very compact overall length.
This is a Shadow Pro Series model, which means it has an aluminum frame & aluminum extruded plank floor and in the horse area, walls and ceiling are lined & insulated. It rides on a pair of 7000 lb. Lippert Equa-Flex axles and Goodyear Marathon Load Range E trailer radials.
At the working end, there’s a nicely assisted ramp that closes behind 50/50 doors. The ramp has a comfortable incline and a grippy mat. (And while we think of it, there are loading lights above both ramps.) The stall divider, walls and butt bars have attractive molded pads and the header above the rear opening is padded as well.
The wall mounts for chest and butt bars have a Z-slot design that lets you get the bars up or down quickly. Body height is a generous 7’6” and body width is 6’9”, giving the horses two wide and tall stalls. The stall divider and head divider are easily removable to create a 10’ box stall.
Forward of the stalls, there’s a pair of 50/50 box stall doors that swing flat on each other to facilitate side unloading. The box stall doors have bar-type uppers that allow good air flow and contribute to the open feeling in the horse area. There’s a large window at each stall, a pair of windows in the rear doors, a drop feed window near each horse’s head, a window in the door over the side ramp and a pair of 2-way vents above the stalls. With the white aluminum lining on upper walls and ceiling, the horse area is very inviting with abundant natural light and ventilation. Further to the comfort of your horses, as mentioned earlier, the walls and ceiling are insulated.
The wedge-shaped mid area is about 6’ wide at the ramp side, tapering to 2’ at the opposite wall. In addition to making walk-out unloading possible, the side ramp is great for people moving in & out and if you have rolling trunks, you’ll find it extremely handy. With the side ramp and the box stall doors, the mid space in this trailer is much more versatile than a dedicated mid tack. From the mid area, turn right to go to the stalls or left to enter the LQ.
Now for the people space… While we just talked about entering the LQ from the mid storage area, let’s enter from the other direction. There’s a doorway on the curb side for direct entry into the LQ. And this is a good spot to mention the 10’ power awning over that entryway. Just press the button and in about 30 seconds, you have exterior living space under cover.
Step inside and immediately to your right, there’s a compact galley with 2-burner cooktop & range hood, sink, microwave and dual-power refrigerator/freezer. Across from the entry is a sleeper/sofa (not a pullout), large window (with emergency release) and several cabinets above.
Not only is the sofa window equipped for emergency exit, the windows on both sides of the gooseneck are emergency escape windows as well. Nice touch. Another nice touch is a handle to aid climbing into the sleeping area. Might seem a trivial detail at first, but have you ever tried to get into or out of a sleeping area that has no handhold?
One area where that slant rear wall yields space benefits is in the bathroom. Slide open the space-saving pocket door (a great idea in a small LQ) and pass from the main living area to the bathroom. To the right is the toilet and a tall linen cabinet. At the top is the power control panel. On the opposite side is the shower. Above the shower is a Fan-Tastic vent with integrated fan. The Fan-Tastic has a frosted lens that serves well as a skylight. Continue through the bath to the mid storage area. Or vice versa. With its very convenient side ramp, the rubber-matted mid space serves well as a mudroom for the LQ.
Other LQ features include air conditioning, propane-fueled furnace and water heater, large hanging locker and a compact sound system. There’s no TV, but there is a roof-mounted omnidirectional TV/FM antenna and an articulated mount to allow a TV to be viewed in the sleeping and/or main area. In addition to a fresh water tank mounted in the sofa base, there are holding tanks in the customary under-floor locations.
This Shadow LQ is equipped with an electric/hydraulic jack, so, as with the power awning, press a button and let a motor quickly do the work. Those motors get power from a pair of batteries in a box tucked under the gooseneck. Under the gooseneck is also where a pair of 20 lb. LP tanks reside (not shown in photos). .
