I am considering purchasing a 6H head to head. Owner does not know the weight. It is a C&C. Do I need a bigger truck than my one ton dually (Ram)?

TIA

Depends ... Are you going to have six full sized horses aboard? Take the trailer to a scale and weigh it. Then .... You have two weights to consider. First ...The total loaded trailer weight plus your truck weight can't exceed the GCVWR (look in your owner's manual)

Second, the trailer hitch weight can't cause the truck to exceed the rear axle / tire weight rating. (look on the door jam)

Doing so invites expensive repairs on the side of the road... or worse

Typically with a gooseneck horse trailer, the Truck GVWR becomes the limiting factor. Like a chain, pulling a gooseneck trailer is subject to the strength of the weakest link.

I'm thinking that your 1 ton dually could be very close to reaching or exceeding the Truck GVWR. This is based on my experience in pulling our LQ horse trailer (16,700 lb loaded weight) with our 2011 F350 DRW with 13,300 lb weight rating. Your really need to get some actual empty and loaded trailer weights to know for sure.

What is the GVWR of your truck? What is the GVWR of the trailer your are thinking of buying?

Be aware that exceeding 26,000 pounds combined weight rating puts you into another class of driver license. The highway patrol can hold you at the side of the road until a driver with the proper license can drive your rig away.

If you are going to haul fully loaded most of the time...you will quickly become unhappy with your 1 ton pickup
