We bought an MD barn 7 years ago and it has been great. It went up in about 1 1/2 days. Their website is www.mdent.com I also have friends who've bought ring-o-steel barns and are happy with them. IMHO they aren't as sturdy as the MD. Another option is to have a contractor/carpenter build the shell, but buy barn parts like the sliding doors from one of the prefab dealers. Good luck and have fun! I was soooo excited to get my barn, my first one ever.

Hi again! I just looked at the fencing question on this site and the poster lists a website that sells the barn pieces like I mentioned before. They look really nice. www.rammfence.com

My husband is in the process of building our barn himself. It is slow going because he refuses to have anyone's help. Our barn is 40' wide and 36' long. It has a center aisle of 16'. He started by just setting the 6x6x20 posts in the ground. Then I contacted a company in north La. to build the trusses and they delivered them for $1100 total. The good thing about doing it yourself is that you can build as much as you can afford that month. So we have the shell of the barn finished along with the tack room. The stalls are all open at this time but we plan to order pre-fab stall fronts later on. The roof is done. And to top it all off there is a 16'x36' apartment on the second floor with a huge deck overlooking the round pen. The best part is that everything that is done so far is completely paid for. Just one last thing, be prepared to have a heart attack when you go to buy a piece of 3/4" plywood. Insane. We have alot of cypress on our property and we also considered having a portable mill brought in to harvest some of the wood to finish the inside of the barn. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Kind of along the same line, does anyone have any good suggestions for online barn plans? We are going to build a 5 stall barn next summer (my husband is a contractor and will be doing it mostly himself) and I have a general idea of what I want, but would love to look at some barn plans and get ideas.

I just found this forum so this may be too late to help but here goes anyway. We have had a Morton barn for about 8 years now and are completely satisfied. They make an excellent barn with a lot of nice touches and lots of options. We are located in south Louisiana and our barn has stood up to several tropical storms without leakage or damage. They have a builder/distributor in Pearl that does a good job. The link to the company follows.

I would also recommend looking at Morton for great floor plan ideas.  We are also building a barn but doing it ourselves.  We used telephone poles for the posts and main beams.  We got those done last fall and now we are starting to frame it in.  I agree that doing it yourself allows you to pay for what you can as you can and if your husband is as anal as mine you couldn't find anyone to do it as perfect anyway!  Actually he was a construction science engineering major so he is really good at building and I know everything will be done correctly.  Good luck.  If you contact Morton they'll also send you a video tape to look at different floor plans.
